It's Dragon Boat Festival today, a traditional Chinese festival. We also call it dumpling festival, as we always eat dumplings during this festival. We didn't make our own dumplings, and we thought of buying some from the market to celebrate this festival. My neighbor just gave us a few dumplings last week, and today, he gave us some more. I am thankful for his kindness and generosity. Have you heard about this festival? Have you tried the dumplings that I showed in the picture? Image: Dumplings that my neighbor gave us

The dumplings in the picture were tied with "plastic string". My mom usually uses different type of string, but I am not too sure what kind of string that is. My mom taught me to make these dumplings two years ago, and I just used normal sewing thread.

@kaka135 So you just untie them once they are cooked and eat the inside?

@Ruby3881 Yes, they are wrapped with bamboo leaves. When it's uncooked, everything will fall out easily. Once it's cooked, as they are glutinous rice, so everything "stick" together, and it'll be in a "pyramid shape", then we start eating.

Do you call this as dumplings? It is very different from the umpling we have here. According to your attached photo, we call it as "zongzi" and it is made from the sticky rice. I am not very keen on it since we can have zongzi anytime we want. But it seems it is a tradition to have it in Dragon Boat Festival.

Yes, we call it "zong zi" in Mandarin. I suppose it's the same as yours. I understand dumplings usually refer to another type of food (shui jiao), am I right? People here call this dumpling as well. I am not sure what the proper English name it should be. You are right. Nowadays we can buy zongzi from the market anytime. My kids are looking for mooncake festival next. What are your next festival to celebrate in China?

@youless How about Mooncake Festival or Mid Autumn Festival (zhong qiu jie)? Do you all celebrate this? It's nice that you have 7 day holiday for the National Day. Ours is on 31 August, and we have one day off.

Good morning to you. I guess it's not as famous as other Chinese festivals. It's called dragon boat festival because there is always dragon boat race during this festival. That's what I know. But I always just eat the dumplings during this festival.

@kaka135 Yes I can see the skill in the wrapping..so lovely. Our dumplings are not rice but rather a flour mixture and dropped in some broth and cooked, usually chicken, so drop dumplings.

Thanks! There are many different kinds of dumplings, and they are made of glutinous rice, some with meat, and some without. Here, many people like to make those dumplings with meat, chestnut, mushroom inside.

@LadyDuck I used to like it when I was younger, but now I feel like there are too much stuff inside. I prefer it to be more plain now. There is another type of dumplings, where there is no other ingredients but just glutinous rice. Sometimes we dip it into sugar or other sweet sauce.
