Dolphins in Laguna Beach

According to local marine biologists, there is a pod of approximately 200 dolphins which live off-shore from Laguna Beach. This is a good thing, because they say that sharks avoid areas where there are a large number of dolphins.
We only occasionally see the dolphins, however. When we do, it is an exceptional treat. Although I have seen them at all times of the year, they seem to be most common in the spring and summer.
Above is a photo I took showing a few dolphins quite near shore! There were children playing and swimmers in the water nearby, so everyone was thrilled to see the dolphins!
I will add another photo under my first comment.

@valmnz - Dolphins are such wonderful animals. They often feel very comfortable around people, too. I am adding another photo of them here. They are in the lower right-hand corner.

@crazyhorseladycx - Yes, they come very close to shore. I have seen them swim around the stairs of a hotel that is at the water's edge at high tide. I have also seen them go right up to people in the water. It is amazing!

@LadyDuck - You are right that dolphins have been known to help humans on many occasions, even when we do not deserve the help!

@dpk262006 - These are wild dolphins in the ocean. Sometimes, though, they come very close to shore. It is very exciting when that happens.

I've been to California once on Vacation..
And we had a place on block from the beach in Oceanside.
One morning I was up at 6am and i took a stroll on the beach while my Aunt slept in
And I saw Dolphins jumping in the the surf.. and like there was no one else around me to witness it.
It was really surreal. but I am glad I got to experience it!

dolphins here in my country are somewhat abused when they are shown in circus.

@ridingbet - I am so sorry to hear that dolphins are abused in your country. We have animal shows here in the U.S. that also use dolphins and many people think that is a form of abuse, too.

@ridingbet - I have heard of similar cases where trainers were killed or seriously injured by the animals they trained. It is sad, because the animals are usually just doing what comes naturally to them.

@DeborahDiane yes, and they are acting on their instincts for survival, and food as well.

@youless - Yes, sharks avoid large groups of dolphins ... which is good for people swimming near dolphins.

I wonder why the sharks avoid the dolphins. Could it be their sonar?

@TiarasOceanView - I think that dolphins see sharks as a threat to their offspring, so dolphins will form groups and attack sharks, driving them away. They have been known to drive them away from people, too. I know there are no guarantees, but I always feel safer when there are dolphins in the water.

@PatZAnthony - I have often wondered the same thing. When I have visited zoos or animal parks, I often wonder what the animals think when they look at those "strange creatures" that pass by every day. Once, when I was out horseback riding, a young coyote pup sat by the side of the trail with its mouth open. I think it was wondering what kind of creature had two heads! LOL

@DeborahDiane unless it is super hot outside I wouldn't care for chilly water.

@Tampa_girl7 - The Pacific Ocean is a little chilly, but many people do swim in it. I love to spend time on the beach, however, the year around.

@crazyhorseladycx - Sometimes that has happened to me ... I get so caught up in looking at the animals in the water that I forget to take a photo. I have also seen whales, sea lions, and a seal. I have never seen sharks, but they also lurk in our Southern California waters. They show them on the news when they are photographed from helicopters. Scary!

I heard dolphins seem to scare sharks away! Why?

@antonbunot - They are protecting their offspring from the sharks, so they group together and attack the sharks. Almost any creature will attack predators in order to protect their offspring, and sharks are definitely predators.
