Have you wondered about your ancestors?

I have information going back a few generations, as does Anne, but what happened before that? Who were those people and where did they live? I was tempted to order the DNA kit from Ancestry, but at $99, it gave me pause. Once in a while on holidays, they offer a special though and Father's Day is one where they do. So, for Anne's birthday this Saturday, I ordered a kit for her and one for my birthday in September. It will be interesting to see what the DNA results are for both of us. Oh, one problem, I somehow ordered three kits, so now must contact them tomorrow to try to avoid the extra $79 charge. Have you been curious about your DNA?

I can't think of a reason why I want to trace my ancestry beyond the two or three generation that came before me. If I found out one of my forefathers was a multi-millionaire or royalty I would become disgruntled that our family had sunk to our present level. However if within our family tree was someone who was hanged for a crime, I would have preferred it remain buried with that ancestor. It's a lose-lose proposal.

Could be at that, @josie_

Living in this melting pot of the US, our ancestors came from all over the world it seems. I suppose that accounts for our interest in genealogy and DNA.

No, I am not at all curious about my DNA. I can go back to many generations, all my ancestors were born in Italy and they were all from North Italy. More than five or six generations back I am not really interested.

@JamesHxstatic For you it is surely more interesting. I think that all my ancestors were Italian.

I just really wonder about the mix of nationalities prior to the ones I know who came from Ireland.

This should be lots of fun James! My ancestors are Russian on both sides and as more and more records are available online, I expect it will become easier to find out the specifics, but because of the language barrier and administrative barriers, right now it is hard to go back past my great grandfathers and great grandmothers

They run these $79 dollar specials sometimes, so it seemed like a good birthday present. I just hope they are on the up and up with the info.

I always wonder about them, what they did for a living and their lifestyle. I know they had to do with the very basics just managing to survive. My family can be traced back only few generations and they are from South India. I will wait for DNA testing and I want to know what they really reveal; if it is just general stuff then I will give it a miss - siva

I have info back to the 1800s, but it the nationalities that interest me at the moment, living in this "melting pot."

I have always wondered. Can't see the steep amount for the test either. Hope you get one for Father's Day.

I am curious - I've been thinking about doing this. Although I'm leaning toward more of a freaky conspiracy theorist in that I wonder if the government will find a way to use these DNA results or maybe they already are.

I beg to differ,I am a bit dubious about the DNA kit results.Over here most families have a long tradition of writing genealogies in which they even trace their family history back to BC.

Most people would love to do this! The prices have come down considerably over the years. Hope you enjoy the information you receive @JamesHxstatic

So do I. It is normally $99 through Ancestry, but they run specials for $79 on some holidays. It will be interesting.

My dad's dad came over from Germany when he was a child. My dad's mother family was here for many years. I know very little about my grandparents on my mother's side other than my mother's mother was married 5 or 6 times. I have never really been interested in having my DNA tested.

No, not really. My dad's uncle traced us back to a small village near Berlin. It's where the last name came from. The place is a horse farm now.

@MALUSE - No, Ganschow. It's now Gestut Ganschow. Not quite sure what Gestut is. I never learned that one, and for whatever reason, never bothered to look it up.

As a mater of fact I asked someone to help me find out information about my family. I was looking for family in Israel but did not find them here , instead she helped me find information on my family I never knew.

@JamesHxstatic It was very interesting because I knew nothing about my family and always wondered but nobody spoke about that. When I went back to look at the information I could not find it and when I looked through her messages only found some and she told me to look up and I am not good at that so I tried and gave up and was sorry I did not put it in my e-mail or maybe if I check it out I may find that I did. I only remember a little.
