Update on our feathered friends... The four baby birds grew and spread their wings and Saturday two of them packed their bags and left home. I didn't see them depart but by a head count I knew the nest was half empty. Sunday morning two become one early in the day. I worried about the one remaining baby. I didn't see mom or dad feeding the little bugger. It was a cloudy, rainy day and I thought maybe he/she will leave when the weather improves. About 5 or so the sky cleared and the sun came out. I was watching the baby bird and he was flapping his wings....he kept it up for a long time. I kept telling him to go for it - fly away birdie. About 7 pm I heard a 'thud' and there was baby bird sitting on the cool cement porch - not moving. I watched for a while and I finally asked my husband to check on the bird. He picked up the bird and gently tossed hm in the air. Birdie went about three feet and landed in the soft grass. Shortly after that the dad bird appeared and seemed to give baby bird a pep talk (or a peep talk in this case.) Baby started flying and again fell to the soft grass but only a few seconds later he took off flying in the direction his dad went - never to be seen again. Now we are closing down the maternity ward. No more baby birds. While it's been fun in some ways, it's annoying in others...the bird poop is gong to be power washed away and we will reclaim what's ours! Photo is mine from last week

Poor little thing, he was not the best pilot in the family. I am glad that daddy bird came to his rescue. Birds are cute, but not too close to the house.

@AbbyGreenhill Be vigilant, because the baby birds like to go back to nest where they were born.

Yes, daddy to the rescue. I hope they are all ok and go live happily and have babies someplace else!

Aw, glad the baby bird got the hang of it! Seeing the empty nest would make me sad in a way, they are so adorable.

Wow! It is so nice to witness something like that. When I was a kid, I enjoyed spending time throwing rice on our rooftop. Whenever I do that, I see birds flying on the rooftop and one by one peck on the rice. You and your husband have kind hearted souls.

Well I am delighted the last fledgling was able to master flying, would have been sad if he hadn't.

What a wonderful story to read. I'm certain that in the future if any birds should seek sanctuary, your home will always welcome them.

Reclaiming the area will be fine indeed. Be glad these were black birds(or crows, not sure which they were) but we had a nest of them in our tree where we used to live. They are so loud! The mother goes to one tree and calls, as loud as she can, for the kids to join her. It goes on and on and begins very early. Ugh!

Poor baby bird, he must have been the runt of the litter. I love watching the birth of the eggs, the peck out, and the flight to freedom. The bird poop, not so much.

Once Tony was moving and a bird had built a nest in Tony`s work boot, he left the boot there and I went to turn in the keys for him and I told the landlady a bird has babies in Tony boot so he left it and asked if she would leave it alone till they flew away. I do not know if she did or not.

That's the cycle of life. The young leave the nest (except for many humans).

Human kids hang around mooching off parents for many years...glad I never had kids, I would not have let that happen.
