Long-legged tractor in France

Today in our travels we came across this tractor which looks for all the world like an alien transport vehicle. Perhaps you’re familiar with them but we don’t see them often in Australia, at least not where we live. It would be used in vineyards and crops to perhaps spray for weeds or to fertilise the paddocks. Being so tall, it straddles the vines or crops, that is, of course, providing the rows of vegetation are the correct distance apart. Don’t you think it looks strange?

It is used for vineyards in the places where the vineyards are high : Bordeaux/Cognac area, and probably others. Where are you taken this photo ?

We took it yesterday somewhere between St Hilaire and Negrepelisse. We are starting to see vineyards again.

Around here crop sprayers look like this picture. They are folded up when they go down the road and my husband calls them mosquitoes. The tires are very high on them too.

@JudyEv They are amazingly wide. The only need to make a couple passes through a field it seems.

@paigea Imagine trying to plough these acreages using a horse-team.

I know that there are certain kinds of spayers that look like this, they are used for tall crops such as corn.

We have seen some really tall corn crops here in the last few days and now we're seeing vineyards again.

@JudyEv yes ma'am, they do! there's some out here that if'n they're pullin' their tools, they take'p both sides 'f the road 'n narrowly miss the fence posts 'n each side.

They make massive machines nowadays don't they? We followed one down an ancient street yesterday and it only just managed to fit between the old walls.

I love how innovative the manufacturers are. They seem to see a need for a machine with particular capabilities and next thing you know they are creating it.

@JudyEv - I have never seen a tractor like that in the United States. It looks very practical, however.

@JudyEv - Who knows! I could drive past a farm here in Southern California one day and suddenly notice one. You know how it is. You buy a new car and suddenly you notice how many other cars of that style are on the road. I'm sure it will be that way with the tractor.

For spraying purposes, they could do a lot of rows at once if they could get above the plants.

@DeborahDiane Unless you have an interest, things can slip by without notice. I wonder what you'll see now?

I guess there are a few variations depending on what they're needed for.

It provides a good vantage view of the tractor operator to be able to see as far as he can of the field to be worked on :)
