How Common is Smoking?

When I was a child in St. Louis, nearly all the adults I knew were smokers. Surprisingly, when I reached adulthood in the late 1960s, I did not become a smoker myself, although both my sister and brother did.
My parents have both smoked for over 70 years (they are in their late 80s), and it has had an especially bad effect on my mother. She now has severe vascular dementia, as well as congestive heart disease, breathing difficulties and other health issues. So far, my dad seems OK, but that could change. My parents live with my sister and her husband in Missouri, just outside of St. Louis. Many of the other adults I saw on a recent visit were also smokers.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, I live in Southern California. Both the town where I live (Laguna Woods) and the town next door (Laguna Beach) are non-smoking towns. This means it is illegal to smoke anywhere in either town unless you are either in your home or car, with the windows closed. You may not smoke outdoors, even in a park or in a private backyard.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, about 15.1% of U.S. adults are smokers. In 2005, 21% of U.S. adults were smokers, so the numbers have been dropping.
Here are some more interesting statistics from the CDC:
The more education you have, the less likely you are to smoke.
18% of adults between the ages of 18-44 smoke
17% of adults between the ages of 45-64 smoke
8% of adults ages 65 and over smoke
Poor people are more likely to smoke than people above the poverty line
19% of adults in the Midwest (where St. Louis is located) are smokers
12% of adults in the West (where California is located) are smokers
More specifically:
Between 20% and 23.7% of adults in Missouri are smokers
Less than 12.8% of adults in California are smokers
I guess it was not my imagination that there seemed to be more smokers in Missouri.
The photo above shows my Dad hand-watering my sister's backyard (although she has a sprinkler system, my Dad likes to hand water certain areas). He has a cigarette in his hand while he does it.
If you want to find out how many people in your state are smokers, you can read the CDC fact chart at the link below. The state-by-state map is at the bottom of the page.

It is illegal to smoke in Boulder here at least outdoors.
I wish there were no smoking in these apartments where I live.
It is very common here to answer your question..

@TiarasOceanView - I am sorry to hear that smoking is allowed in the building where you live. It must be very unpleasant at times.

@TiarasOceanView - I am sorry that smoking affected my parents, too. It is sad to see how much my mother is suffering now.

I know that many adults still smoke in Switzerland, but the good thing is that more or less they can only smoke in their houses, most of the places are now "smoke free". No one in my family smoke, I smoked for a very limited time, when my ex-boyfriend smoked.

@DeborahDiane The new law states that adults cannot smoke if there are kids in the house. I wonder how they can check that this is respected.

@LadyDuck - Ahh! That is an interesting law. I wonder how they will enforce that law. Perhaps, if children develop asthma or other breathing problems, they will investigate to see if the parents are smoking.

@LadyDuck - I agree that it is better for everyone if people who choose to smoke are only able to do it in their own homes. Then, they only affect themselves. It has been tragic for me to see how much it affected my mother.

I think that most people who started smoking just for fun eventually became addicted to it. It is a problem all over the world.

@DeborahDiane It is beyond me why some people continue to smoke now that they know smoking will take its toll on their health.

@changjiangzhibin89 - You are absolutely right. I have heard that passive smoke is as bad for our health as if we were smoking ourselves.

It was much worse back in the 60s and 70s then add to that pot smokers. I smoked from 1969 to 1988. Very close to 20 years and boy was I a heavy smoker.
Many actors were shown smoking in the shows they were in, some actually thought it was a sign of maturity. Boy, are we easy to brainwash or what.

I think it's sadder that we've allowed actors to define what being an adult is @DeborahDiane I kinda like not fitting into a mold.

@rebelann - Yes, I remember when it seemed as if every actor was smoking in every movie. Remember how glamorous it seemed in movies like "Auntie Mame?" It is sad that smoking has been devastating to so many people.

@Shavkat - I don't think smokers are bad people, but it does cause their bodies to rot. That is true. It is very sad to watch.

@Shavkat - Yes, their health conditions are very bad. It is unfortunate so many people smoke and die too young, as a result.

@DeborahDiane I had seen some acquainted friends who passed away at a young age. I hope the smokers will be sensitive enough to smoke in distance.

I grew up with no smokers in my family. My ex that I was married to was a smoker. I lived with it for 6 years. I have smoking and smoke and with my rhinitis it is not good for me.

@Hannihar - My parents also smoked when I was a child. My husband smoked when we were first married, but stopped within a few months. I agree that smoking is terrible for most people, but especially those with lung problems.

@Hannihar - Oh, yes. We get big grass fires here in California and the smoke is terrible. The problem is that they are so huge, it can be impossible to get away from them without driving a hundred miles away or more, which is not practical very often.

Yes, that and smoke from a fire are both terrible for people with lung problems.

With the government making as much as it does, smoking will always be legal somewhere!
Can't understand why so many do it and defend it @DeborahDiane
It is really shocking how many we see who are maybe 15 or so smoking. Very common here.

@DianneN - I never smoked. My husband did when we first got married, but stopped a few months later. None of our children or grandchildren smoke. In California, smoking is frowned on, but we have a few friends who still do it.

@franxav - Yes, the younger you are, the more likely you are to smoke.
