Does your house have a DRAWING ROOM or PARLOR?

The old days, back in the 1600's, rich homes had both. The drawing room was a place where men could set and have a smoke or a drink and talk shop or do business, or go over war strategy or talk politics, while the parlor room was a place for women to hang out. They would discuss ladies things and drink tea and have finger sandwiches and petit fours and such. These days the homes of the 20th and 21st Century usually have what is now called the Den or Living Room and of course, men and women both share the same room and when it comes to the MAN CAVE, that is a place that is similar to what used to be the old drawing room. A Man Cave today can be just a room with a few pieces of nice furniture and a computer and a stereo or tv set and some show cases of memoabilia and so forth but mainly we all like to have a place to sit and chat and or discuss business. A drawing room could be interpreted today as a place for children to draw and do art projects and puzzles and adults can be creative with arts and crafts projects. But then that is a thing a lot of homes just don't have enough room for. Most houses for the average person or family are too small I think and have too few rooms to modify for specialized use. If you have an extra room in your home, what sort of use would you really like to use it for other than just a storage or guest room?

We are only two of us and we have three bedroom upstairs and an additional room downstairs. We used one room for our computers and tech books and another to use like a "library", one is a guest room.

This is the best use of space in the home, making it functional for home and personal business and other things computer and learning related. I like. If I had a home larger than the one we have now, I would make one into an art studio and put up drawing boards and easels for painting and drawing and such.

We just have one room..drawing or living whatever you want to call it. lol. Three bedrooms, small ones, and a dining and kitchen and three bathrooms. 1 balcony to stand and watch birds, and another to use as utility. All within 1250 sft.

@lookatdesktop .. Right now, the house is a mess..to be honest. My aunt's things are here, kids (my neighbors) are with me more often, so I am not really settling it all seriously. One room is study plus nursery plus exercise room. I call it my room because I sleep here. Dad uses guest room to sleep and aunt's things are here in the third room kinda. I agree that is a lot of room. We realize it when we have to clean it up.

@vandana7 , Yea, I get the feeling. Housework never ends. And I put it off until the last possible minute.

All that space. Are you using it all for intended purposes by it's design or do you use one of the 3 bedrooms as a guest room in case you get company overnight or weekend visits?

Our old house had a "dining room" that we used as a creative room for homework, puzzles and arts and crafts type stuff, since we had an eat-in kitchen. We also had a "family room/library" that was separate from the living room. We could have adult company in the living room, which was nicer and neater. If you made it to the family room/library, then you were not so formal and could expect a little mess. Our new house has more square footage than the old one, but it has less rooms. I am not sure how the setup is going to be, but I do like being able to have dedicated spaces for certain activities, especially when the activity can be messy and you do not want to have to always clean it up after using it and then get it out again the next time you want to use it just in case company shows up (for instance puzzles or painting). I also like to have a separate space for the library/game room, because sometimes you just want a quiet, comfortable space to read or play a game without interruptions.

Women ate sammiches made out of fingers? Yuck. It's funny to go see a couple of sites near me: the one-room log cabin in which President Lincoln was born, and the mansion that inspired "My Old Kentucky Home." What a contrast!! (It's been a while since I was there, so I can't remember if the home has a drawing room or a parlor.)

Your image made me hungry. We have a couple of extra rooms in our home. One is A Florida room, or sitting room and one is an office. I love the idea of calling a room your parlor or drawing room. It sounds so elegant and Victorian.

I have a drawing room in my childhood house. It's quite large actually... It's nice to have them, I guess.
