Back to basics for The Horse

When I was up at the Father's Day Grass Valley Bluegrass Festival, I ran into a representative from Santa Cruz Guitars, a manufacturer of elite hand-made guitars in Santa Cruz CA. I asked the representative if she could send me some raw sound holes, as I've owned two Santa Cruz guitars and would like to make some coasters from Santa Cruz sound holes. She was hesitant, as they don't usually do that, but she ultimately relented. About a week later, I received 10 sound holes from Santa Cruz Guitars. I'm about to finish my first pair of Santa Cruz Guitar sound hole coasters. I have the glue gun heating up, and will attach felt bottoms to the first pair. And then two more later. The first will go to my bluegrass buddy Tom, who plays a Santa Cruz Tony Rice model. The rest...we shall see. I promised to send one pair back to Santa Cruz guitars for their waiting room at the facility. Are you working on any "projects" this weekend?

Looks like a great project for the weekend. This weekend is working in my organic garden. I am preparing new lines for planting. Yesterday, we turned the dirt, so today it is cleaning rocks and planting a line of marigold flowers down the middle of the roll.

@TheHorse Thank you. Yes, I plant a lot of veggies. However, I put a line of marigold flowers down the center of my lines to control the bugs.

That's such a great idea!! Do you know what they normally do with that wood? I'd like to see some of Birdseye wood, those would also be pretty. No projects this weekend although I'd like to see my granddaughter and help her make a card for her grandgrandma.

Martin Guitars makes promotional materials out of them. They stamp them and then give them away when people take factory tours. Collings Guitars was HAPPY that I asked for some. They've sent me two boxes of 20 pairs. I'm not sure what they normally do with them. Gibson guitars snubbed me when I made an inquiry. Santa Cruz--I'm not sure. Same with Larrivee.

I'd say making a card sounds like a good idea.

Partying sounds fun. I guess I partied Friday. We had a gig, and food and drink were involved. Stay hydrated!

@DianneN I love being home as well. Just played a gig at an Old Folks Home, and then stopped at TJs for Scotch, lox, coffee, and other absolute necessities before heading to my place. It's almost pool time.

Thanks! It's a lot of fun, and I can make it last as long as I want. Some coasters take only a couple of weeks to make. Others take months.

No big projects, I had to wash my laundry yesterday and today I want to bake some muffins for the breakfast and prepare a cheesecake. Those are my only projects.

@TheHorse I am sorry your kid client was a brat. I am painting some small fruit wooden boxes, I will put a plastic inside and then add soil and grow herbs inside.

Sounds like good ones to me. I did get two pairs of coasters done. I also saw a kid client in the afternoon, but he was a brat. Today, I mostly relax after I get some progress notes done.

@TheHorse Now I've got it. I didn't get what these things have to do with guitars. The literal translation of the German term would be 'underputters'. The word describes its function perfectly, don't you think?

@MALUSE Germans are so practical. I have no idea why Americans call them "coasters."

I turn them into coasters. Do you have another name for coasters in Germany? They go under cups and glasses so your wooden tables don't get little rings on them.

@TheHorse Excuse my ignorance but what are Santa Cruz Guitar sound hole coasters and what do you do with them?

Sounds holes are the disks that guitar manufacturers have left over when they make acoustic guitars. I stain them, and put polyurethane (to make them water-proof) and felt bottoms on them. Coasters are used to protect wooden table tops from the moisture in glasses containing beverages.

@TheHorse So do you use them as coasters?
