Favorite "Night" Songs #3 - "Dance the Night Away"

Remember the song from Sesame Street, "3 is a Magic Number?" Well, we are at #3 in my Favorite "Night" Songs series: "Dance the Night Away" by Rock and Roll Hall of fame band Van Halen. From their 1979 5 x platinum album, Van Halen II, "Dance the Night Away" was aimed directly at the radio. The result? The song reached #15 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was the band's first Top 20 single. Interestingly, "Dance the Night Away" is said to have been inspired by Fleetwood Mac's "Go Your Own Way." This was totally radio friendly, so much so that guitarist Eddie Van Halen didn't even play a guitar solo during the tune. . The majority of the songs on Van Halen II had been around since the band had been playing clubs, but it is believed that "Dance the Night Away" was the only song written during the recording of that album. The song is classic Van Halen. The group never played this one in concert after Sammy Hagar replaced David Lee Roth as vocalist in 1985. However, since the band's reunion with Roth, the band plays it live during each performance. And why not? It doesn't rock in the way that "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" and "Atomic Punk" rock, but it's a great pop tune, and remains a favorite song from Van Halen's catalog.
