Get Back in the Car

In an earlier discussion I wrote about the girl who told her boyfriend to get back in the car when he was committing suicide. She had encouraged him to commit suicide for months and in this instance he was in his truck breathing in carbon monoxide when he changed his mind, stepped out of the truck and called the girl to tell her he was having second thoughts. She told him to get back in the truck and finish the job. And that's exactly what he did. I read in the Atlanta Journal today that Michelle Carter was convicted of of manslaughter and sentenced to two and a half years but she is required to serve only fifteen months with five years of probation. Prosecutors asked for a sentence of seven to twelve years. The judge granted the defenses motion that wlll keep Carter out of jail until her appeals are heard. The judge said: All she had to do was say , Get out of the truck, and none of us would be here right now. He said her words constituted waton and reckless conduct.

I was surprised too. I think the judge was too lenient.

I was very surprised by the light sentence, but not shocked. I figured if she got herself good enough lawyers, they would be able to successfully argue for the case to be thrown out, or at least get her a light sentence. Now it will be interesting to see how she fares during the appeals process.

@RubyHawk I don't think she can fare worse in the appeals. Either the conviction is upheld, or it's overturned. The appeals courts can't change the sentence and make it longer.

It might be to her advantage to take the sentence and serve her time. She might lose in the appeals. Evidently the lawyers are confident.

@moffittjc Okay, so she can't make it worse for herself. then it's worth a try. She might actually get away with murder. 15 months is a small price to pay for a human life.

She was very lucky to get such a small sentence. Maybe when she gets out she will mess up and end up back in. She is one sick person.

I don't know. Seems the sentence should have been a bit stiffer. Maybe because it was still his decision to do what she said.

@RubyHawk Twelve seems more reasonable than what she got.

@just4him It sounds very reasonable to me. She's lucky she didn't get the twelve.

@Courtlynn I watched part of it and I didn't see any signs of her being sorry. She never apologized to the boys family

They are left with the knowledge that the murderer of their son got off with a slap on the wrist. She might never serve a day.

This is not justice, she deserved a more severe sentence.

I think she should at least serve fives years and that would be getting off lightly.

She needs prison time so that her ego can be in check, she thinks she has the power to make people kill themselves now, since this poor man.

And she had that power in this case.I thought she might be sentenced to a mental hospital but she was found to be sane.

It is amazing to me the power of peers! He was having second thoughts and she convinced him to take his life. That's power And leave it to our legal system to give her a light sentence
