What's that ship doing there I wonder?

The Abbey de Hambye is located in Normandy, France and is a Benedictine medieval monastery. Much work has been done on the restoration of this old building and there were a number of English/French panels in the grounds enabling visitors to gain some idea of what the place was like in earlier times. In the church itself, however, there was no explanation for the model ship which was hanging from the vaulted ceiling. It is always things like this that intrigue me and I feel like writing to the authorities for an explanation. Do you wonder about stuff that seems out of place?

May be you were told that the Abbey was built by the Baron Guillaume Paynel, issued by an Anglo-Norman family. The Normans were descendants of Vikings and surely navigators. I suspect this is a symbol of the Paynel family.

I've typed up most of the information panels but there is too much to put in a post and it isn't really interesting to people. You are surely right about the link to the Vikings. I hadn't thought of that.

@JudyEv very intriguing - surprised the church has no leaflets explaining its ship

@JudyEv possibly made by a parishioner or someone from the town sailed on such a ship in its history

Maybe it was a temporary thing but I can't imagine its purpose.

@JudyEv There wasn't a brochure about the abbey that discussed why the ship was there?

@just4him There was a brochure and lots of informative panels but I'm sure there was nothing about ships.

It seems so out of place there. The abbey isn't anywhere near an ocean or sea.

Talk about a conversation piece! I can't figure out if there is supposed to be some symbolism there or an eccentric rich donor wanted it there.

I should have asked at the desk as we went out but I forgot. Now I'll probably never know.

Perhaps they had an activity and they forgot to remove it. It is part of decorations.

That could be. No-one has thought to look up for a while and it keeps getting missed.

Maybe it served as a reminder to worshippers gathered at the monastery to pray for all the sailors at sea, for safe travels and safe return to the ports.

It seemed really out of place - and it wasn't even positioned particularly well.
