Am I a germaphobe or just picky?

Watermelons are so delish this time of year in the southern US.
Last week we stopped at a little roadside market to ask about their watermelons.
The owner said, "Here! Try a piece!" He was giving samples in order to sell the product.
Now I'm not a snob. And l'm not offically a Germaphobe. But there was no way I was going to eat a sample, not knowing who had touched it or sneezed on it, let alone how many flies had already "sampled" it.
We bought two watermelons and they really were delicious.
I was able to enjoy the watermelons with having to wonder if I were the first.

I'm a little more particular than my husband, but he didn't want to try it either.

I don't blame you at all. But then, I'm a germophobe,

I think the brainwashing of the media is working on you. Would you have had those thoughts ten years ago or even five years ago? Your stomach acid will kill any fly dirt that might be on it anyway. I'm glad the watermelons were good but you're being way too paranoid. Most people are these days.

It's funny because I used to give out samples in Walmart. But I made sure everything was clean and all dishes sanitized, not like leaving something outside in the hot sun and no telling who or what touched the sample.

I will never eat fruit when they are giving free samples for the same reasons as you. Also, I always wash my melons we soap before I eat them as we don't know where they were laying.

@1creekgirl I won't eat certain dishes at potluck dinners, especially if I don't know how long it's been sitting out. My great uncle Bill used to buy fried chicken the day before our family get-togethers and would leave it sitting out overnight because he didn't have a refrigerator...my parents always told us not to eat whatever he brought to the potluck (although my brothers never listened...miraculously they never got food poisoning.)

There are certain dishes I won't eat unless I know the cook really well, like banana pudding and chicken salad.

I would probably shy away from sampling the watermelon too especially with all the flies that would be at a roadside stand. Glad your watermelons were delicious

I couldn't blame you for not wanting a piece, you never know who touched it.
