School starts tomorrow here in Louisville...and the State Fair starts Thursday. Gee, what's wrong with that picture? In honor of the return of school (and the accompanying rolling yellow traffic jams known as school buses) I'm looking at my favorite songs centered around school. Here's today's entry.
#9: Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2) - Pink Floyd
Yeah, I know, couldn't I pick one that hasn't been played to death by FM classic rock radio? If you think this is bad, wait until tomorrow's song.
Given that I don't listen to FM classic rock radio any more, I don't have to endure hearing this song 83,000 times a day (which is 82,990 times a day more than when it was a #1 song in late 1979!). And, by and large I'm not much of a Pink Floyd fan, but I do like this song. A lot.
As with many others, I cannot help but love the "dark sarcasm" of the opening line: "We don't need no education." Later in the song they say, "Teachers, leave them kids alone." Yeah, you don't need no education. You need to be whopped upside the head with a grammar book!
There must have been something in the water in England in 1979, as this wasn't the only top ten song in 1979 about the evils of school: there was also "The Logical Song" by Supertramp, inspired by Roger Hogsdon's life in a boarding school. Interestingly, both refer to "thought control" in school.
But on the other hand, the inmates are running the asylum now. Maybe the teachers left them kids alone too much.
Another Brick in the Wall (Part 2)
Written by Roger Waters
Recorded by Pink Floyd
From The Wall, 1979
Out of respect to @JolietJake , who hates "single edits," this is not the 45 version but the LP version:

I like Pink Floyd but I don't particularly like this song. I'm a teacher and, yes, you need your education. Look at the effing mess the US is in due to undereducated voters! And I hate the ending with someone screeching about you can't have your pudding if you don't eat your meat. I'll pass on this one.
