I'm glad I don't sell cars for a living

I don't know how people sell cars for a living. They have to work on weekends and most major holidays. The hours are crazy. The work day is usually way more than eight hours. The work week exceeds the typical forty hour week and with constant overtime it exceeds that amount by a lot. Enough times, they have to go to work on their days off. They never know what kind of paycheck they will get at the end of the week as it's commission based. One week they can make thousands. Another week they can make hundreds. All depends on how many cars they are able to sell and deliver and by how much they are able to overcharge their customers. Being a car salesman is tough. I am glad I didn't decide to sell cars for a living. Not even sure how successful I'd be if I went that route. I ended up marrying a guy that does this though. And he loves it. Maybe that's why he puts up with the crazy hours and not knowing exactly how much he will make every week, as it all depends on commission. That's the reason I don't want to work in any kind of sales. I prefer a stable paycheck and a forty hour work week. Now, if a job offered a good base salary and commission on top of that maybe then I'd consider sales. But otherwise no way!

We were car shopping yesterday and salesmen and their jobs are quite different than it was years back. All of them wore shorts and have their cell phone and soda with them and they don't really work very hard. They sit in an A/C building, which is brand new, and all the comforts. The only time they really work hard is that final push to make the sale and when we buy a new car we don't have to be talked into one, we know what we want.

@lovebuglena I am originally from NJ and my brother in law owned a jeep dealership and I know he dressed up since he owned the place...but you can't compare NY/NJ to where I live now. This is not dress up area.

My hubby used to wear pants, shirt, and tie. Then they switched to pants and polos. Might be more comfortable being in polos during the hot summer days but they look terrible. I think salesman should wear a shirt and tie, if not a blazer as well, as essentially selling a car is a business transaction. But perhaps how they are dressed does not affect the sale.

And they have to deal with different types of customers. The feelers, entertainers, and of different statuses.

So true. Some people just waste your time. Like they come in with no intention of ever buying anything and pretend that they are interested in buying a car. After a few hours they just leave. During all that time spent with these people you could actually be selling a car to someone that has the intention of getting one.

Car salesman in our country don't work holidays or more then 40 hours a week. I do inbound sales for a US company, and we work long hours and holidays. Different markets and different demands is all that it is I think.

Wow! I wish it was the same way for my husband. Guess it also depends on what dealership a person works in.

Some people choose jobs they love and some people have the personality for sales. I don't think I have the personality to be a car salesman/woman but I often thought it must be fun and interesting.

It is a tough job indeed when you don“t know how much you got paid every week.
