If you have been following my Favorite "Weather" Songs series, which is songs that have some sort of weather in the title, you probably saw this coming a mile away. We are at #6 in the countdown: "Riders on the Storm" by The Doors.
From their 1971 album, L.A. Woman, "Riders on the Storm" was, according to keyboardist Ray Manzarek, the last song recorded by The Doors' prior to the death of vocalist Jim Morrison. It was also the last single that the band released during Morrison's lifetime.
The song performed well enough, reaching #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 (it entered that chart on the day Morrison died,) and #22 in the UK. It also hit the Top 10 in both Canada and The Netherlands.
"Riders on the Storm" has been covered multiple times, notably by Cameo, Creed, and Snoop Dog.
According to Manzarek, The Doors only played the song in concert twice.
I play the song everytime I load up the jukebox at the bar, and unlike other tunes that I play, nobody seems to mind. It's a classic, and there was no way that this wasn't making the cut in this particular countdown.
Enjoy!

Definitely a classic. I also didn't realize it was one of Morrison's last songs.

I didn't realize that, either. It makes sense, though.

@teamfreak16 I was a big Doors fan in high school, you'd think I'd know that. I played them almost as much as I played The Cult.

The other day I said that I couldn't come up with ten favorite songs for a lot of "universally loved" bands. That's true of this band. But this is one of their classic songs, that's for certain.

@teamfreak16 -- it's pretty amazing that they didn't have a bass player, and you don't even miss it.
How about Manzarek's singing?

@teamfreak16 It certainly does. Some of the places we visit look a bit ho-hum but once you're inside and learning about the background and so on, it becomes much more fascinating. We talk about ABCs (another bl**dy castle/cathedral/church) but we still keep visiting them here and there.

I liked that song! It had that eerie vibe to it with the rain sound effects. Piano by Manzarek was excellent!

Oooh I love this one! Late at night, I like to drink a few vodkas, then put the doors dvd on and crank it up. This track is so atmospheric. I enjoyed reading Ray's biography too.
