Canoe Artwork

Different communities have added artwork to their parks and sidewalks
Last summer while travelling in the US we admired the painted Elk as we drove through Elkhart, Indiana. So many street corners sported colourful elk sculptures
Locally the Ridgeway, Stevensville and Crystal Beach have chosen a bicycle theme. There are painted bicycles with colourful baskets of flowers on many of the street corners.
In the city of Welland, to promote both the arts and the flat water center they have chosen to decorate with canoes.
I've been driving past them, never stopping to take a photo, but yesterday my sister and I walked through the park and I stopped to take the photograph.
Interestingly, my other sister had taken almost the same photo a couple of days earlier.
Does your community have a theme decor?

Nothing around here but in my hometown they have all the park benches painted which looks very cool.

In the village just before we got to Mont St Michel recently they had a lot of life-size fibreglass cows, all artistically painted. Cows like this are popular in Australia too.

I think it adds something to the town. There are some who scoff, but if it is significant to the community...go for it.

@JudyEv some of tour local communities have some really clever signs welcoming you to town.

@Morleyhunt I feel the same about the decorated roundabouts. You might see a miniature castle or whatever in the roundabout and you know there is one nearby. And I think it shows that the community is proud of its town.

We have moose dotted here and there. Also you may spot a catamount brightly painted with a theme. I believe the moose have been used twice so far as fundraisers and were very successful. The catamounts were the most recent ones.

@Morleyhunt we haven't had one in long time. I hope they do another one in the spring. It is good for tourism. Usually runs into the fall months ending with an auction of the artwork to raise funds for our local arts center.

I loved the elk in Elkhart. The first couple I saw, I didn't realize it wa a decorating theme.

We are so small here on the islands, it isn't possible to do this. We don't have large parks and areas that we can paint themes on. BTW, this is beautiful and looks great. I love the idea and it sure beats looking at tagging all over the place.

@Morleyhunt It adds so much to the place. Most of what we see here now is tagging. People are cleaning it up and there isn't any new tagging so far.

They don't take up a lot of room and add something. As a passenger I always love seeing things like this when travelling. When I'm driving I don't always have time to notice,

I liked what was done. Does it say who the artist is?

I believe each of the decorated canoes has a plaque with the name of the artist and who donated the money to produce the work of art.

I will have to search for it before commenting. I never noticed anything unless someone told to do so. That boat there is very pretty but immersed in water, only the fish could see the gorgeous decoration. A pity.

These canoes will never return to the water. They are purely decorative.

@Morleyhunt Oh, isn't that a waste? I see, they are work of art only, like a painting?

@YrNemo exactly...they are mounted on pedestals to show them off.

Driving in the south I was always amazed at the number of pine trees along the highways.

I'm not into football. I guess I wouldn't fit in down in Alabama.

This is an awesome idea!
In my community, more towards the city area, it is more common to see mural work on the buildings.. as far as canoes go, that is something I haven't seen before. Excellent idea, and very lovely
Thank you for sharing this!
