When I begin to get a bit upset with the situation right now and feel anxiety start to mount I remember my doctor's words while I was in the hospital. That the Prozac I am on now stays in the system a while, so if I forget to take it for a day or so it is still there helping me. And, I was able to get the Hydroxyzine that is to be taken as needed for agitation. It is the one he said was to help with anxiety and it sure did while I was in the hospital. Not addictive. That's just the meds.
I have other things I can do too. I am very glad to have a anti-depressant that helps me feel a bit better. I can call friends, count, watch a silly show or meditate. Mylot too. It is so good to know I have what I need now.
How do you cope when things bother or upset you?

Talk to my few friends, listen to music, watch tv or a movie, bake or even shop. Babysitting helps too, cause it takes mt mind off problems going on for a bit

I think diverting our attention is a good one.

I scream and yell and in a few mins. all is well. I don't have serious problems...so it's easy to cope.

That's good. A friend of mine told me that she used to drive out of her small town to a rock formation and scream and yell there. I wish I had one of those sometimes.

@celticeagle oh id love to do that too. In one of the shows i watched.. they had an episode where a girl went to a place and threw breakables, to relieve stress. Ever since i watched it, I've wanted to do that myself! But nowhere like that that i know of.

Glad your meds help you ok - I just try to ride through my anxieties or take my mind off them through other activity - writing them out can be a cathartic purging too

I think that is the best coping skill I have. Diverting my mind onto something else. Get involved in a good thriller.

@celticeagle If you were a little bit more mobile you could leave the house and go for a walk.

Yes Keeping busy is a good one. I will only use "my little chemical friend" if things get bad. It's my back up.

The social skills we try to teach the kids at school are known as the Zones of Regulation. It helps to know and label what you are feeling. We have breathing skills we teach the kids and help them make a "tool kit" of activities that work for them. You can be in the blue zone, where you are down or ill, or the yellow zone where you are feeling uptight and on edge or the red zone where you are out of control in some way. The goal is to get to the green zone where you are calm, ready to learn or play and managing your feelings in an expected and acceptable way. There are no wrong zones, they just need to be managed for us to be happy. Some of the kids are soothed by spraying and wiping down counters or by having a meaningful activity or listening to a story or music. I know I get stressed out when I cannot get to my computer enough.I know that getting even a small corner organized really boosts my feelings.

I remember one of the PSR's Josh had taught him a breathing exercise to use when he got upset. Worked well too. These zones sound great to teach young kids. They need to be aware of their feelings. To accomplish something is a good way to feel better. Those are great tips. Thank you for sharing them.

The best way I cope is finding ways to take my mind off of the things that are bothering me. I try to avert my attention to where it's needed most. I think for me the most difficult thing was learning that there are things in my life I can't control and even though that doesn't take the stress away I have learned to keep moving forward because I can't change it. I also see my therapist which helps some but I still have a difficult time talking about certain issues in my life. I once learned that as long as we keep those things to ourselves and refuse to open up we'll never be able to get over those issues. You have to be able to talk about them to someone. I hate how anxiety can take you down in a moments notice. One minute you can be on the top of the world and then anxiety creeps in and brings you to your knees, it sucks but that's how life is. I don't take medicine for mine because I hate the idea of taking it. I would probably have anxiety over that. Hopefully, you start feeling yourself again, and by that I mean who you are despite your anxiety and depression.

@celticeagle It does get scary, I don't always catch mine soon enough either. Sometimes, I feel like something is wrong and can't pinpoint what it is.

@sissy15 .....Glad that doesn't happen a lot. I've had it long enough I can pinpoint what it is. Now I have a med I can take if it gets real bad too.

That sounds like a great way to handle it. If I catch it soon enough I can do this too. But, sometimes I don't catch it soon enough and it goes out of control. That's when It gets scary.

It's chocolate for me and my daughter. If we have a stressful day we both look forward to some chocolate at the end of the day.
