Cutlery, chopsticks or fingers?

Japan

What do you like to use best? Are you a spoon, fork and knife person? Chopsticks? Or fingers? I have lived in Japan for so long that I find chopsticks the easiest to use for most things. I even find it easier to eat spaghetti with chopsticks. I use a spoon when things are more liquid, and of course I eat apples, cucumbers, and other finger foods with fingers. If I needed to pick one thing to use for the rest of my life, it would be chopsticks.

Since I am English, I have learnt to eat with knife, fork and spoon from my earliest years. I have tried chopsticks many times and I can now manage them fairly well but it is still slow and feels very awkward and I admire those who can make the food disappear so quickly with them, especially rice! Of course, like anyone, I can eat an apple or a pie with my fingers but, again, I can only admire the daintiness and skill of those (Indians, mostly) whom I have seen eat a meal with their fingers. Whatever implements are involved, there are those who can eat elegantly and those who don't.

I would say I am not one who eats elegantly. I don't make a mess, though.

@petatonicsca I love Korean food and I love kimchi. I'm so sorry that your stomach can no longer handle spicy food.

Do you like Korean food? I love it but it doesn't love me any more. I used to eat a lot of kimchi. Now my stomach doesn't like spicy food (but my mouth still does.)

@toniganzon So am I. I love Indian curries, Mexican food, Korean food etc. I eat some about once a month and then eat very bland food for the next week.

I would love to be able to have the great skill of eating with chopsticks, however I can see I would have difficulty as I am not accustomed to them. I always like watching people eating with chopsticks on tv. I just use the regular silverware to eat.

I am a spoon and fork person. Though I stayed in Japan for a year and five months, I still prefer the spoon and fork. This is what I have been using for almost my entire life.

@hereandthere Yeah I did. You cannot eat ramen in Japan if you don't know how to use chopsticks. So I have to practice and practice. Well I get used to it after sometime. In the beginning it is hard. But soon I enjoy my meal with chopsticks.

I usually eat with just spoon. Sometimes I don't need a fork to go with the spoon. The spoon is enough. I find it hard to use chopsticks. I rarely eat with just my bare hands. I find it messy

I eat with whatever is provided. I'm pretty flexible. But when I eat spaghetti, I always wish I had chopsticks.

I can use chopsticks and I do if I eat in a Chinese or Japanese Restaurants (the two sets of chopsticks are not identical) but what I use most is knife, fork and spoon. I use my fingers when there are no alternatives, the important is to be discrete.

Korean chopsticks are the hardest to use because they are metal and thinner than the others.
