Goodbye, Manitou

Now is as good a time as any, so I might as well get this over with. In an earlier discussion, I alluded to the fact that we are moving. It might not have seemed like it, but I (we) have been pretty depressed the last month. It's more complicated than this, but essentially, we are being priced out of Manitou with a major rent increase (to be fair, our slumlords, err, landlords, are jacking up everyone's rent to market value. Everybody wants to live in Manitou, so they will get it, too. We have the premier apartment in the complex, so we had the biggest increase. We also aren't the only ones forced to leave. Three other tenants are leaving as well. The owners are justifying this by making major repairs and renovations, something they only became interested in when they decided to put the place on the market.) We have lived in Manitou, in this complex (which is in a perfect location,) for six years. We have spent the last month looking, and the only place we could afford has nothing but really bad reviews: apparently, our landlords aren't the worst in town. So, in the meantime, we have been getting rid of everything we don't absolutely need. This is heartbreaking, and the major part of our depression: we also spent the last month finding new homes for our four cats. The last one leaves tomorrow, which is devastating. I'm actually staying up as late as I can tonight, just to spend as much time with him as possible, even if he goes to sleep. Friday afternoon, we'll be moving into an extended stay motel in Colorado Springs until we can find an apartment. This motel has premium cable and a gym, is right next door to one of my favorite locally owned bike shops, and is also right on one of my favorite bike paths. In addition to military stationed at the nearby Air Force Academy, many of the tenants are elite cyclists staying in Colorado Springs to train at altitude. So we should have at least decent neighbors. But I'm not gonna lie. I loved living in Manitou. But it had to end sometime. Today, as I walked to the ATM, I no longer felt like a resident. And that made me more sad than I already was.
Firefall - Goodbye, I love you *1978* Maybe you think I'm letting you go Maybe it's not that way Maybe I love you more than you know Maybe you'll know someda...

Thank you. It was pretty much inevitable. Whoever buys the place will probably jack it up even more, honestly. It's a landlord's market right now.

6 years is a long time and you have a lot of memories there. Saying goodbye is always sad but moving to a new place is also exciting. Wishing you all the best.

Thank you. My girlfriend is looking at it as an opportunity to start fresh. I'm coming around. Getting rid of the cats is the hardest part.

Manitou is a wonderful place and I know that you will miss living there. I am sorry that all of this is happening to you. I do hope that you find something soon as a motel can get old after awhile. One nice thing is that you can always go back to Manitou for visits.

We will be saving for a place we like, but we've also talked about saving for a van and just going places and hanging out for a month at a time or something.

Damn, that is devastating. Really sorry to hear that brother I really get mad when I hear stories like this. Seems to be back on the rise with this happening to many people too. Think Hurricane Harvey is bringing this issue back to light. I know if my sister did not have a mortgage, we would not be able to afford to live in this town. That is really terrible about the cats, but corporate America rolls on and does not care. This country seriously needs a reality check.

@teamfreak16 Yeah, under market, but we all know the market is way over priced to where it should be to make things affordable.

@crossbones27 - It is definitely a landlord's market here. Everyone wants to live in Manitou, so they know they can get high rent.

This is entirely all about money. But we have been paying under market rate for some time now. It was going to catch up with us eventually.

Oh no! I am so sorry. Makes me sad thinking about this move. See what that landlord does not know is that you are his payday, you are reliable. I have one that has been with me 18 years! And I have to say I have not went up but $20 every 5 years! Both are mental disable and they have limited income. Some months they were the only people that paid rent! The next tenants could be the tenants from hell and trash the place. The repairs for move in and move outs outweigh just leaving long term lower paying tenants alone. This is just unbelievable!

It's not worth the energy to fight it. We've been paying under market value for a long time. We know a couple that were living over one of the bars in town, paying $400 more a month for a place a third of the size of ours. It was inevitable.

Oh no. I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm happy you have a place, for now and that you found homes for your cats where they will be taken care of, but I am so sorry you had to find them new homes to live at. A comfort, as small as it - is that you did the right thing, by finding homes for them. When I lived on the farm we would get strays - strays that were declawed - so likely left off by someone. Cats since the farm have come from the shelter where they may or may not find a home. You did the right thing in this situation. I don't know all of the situation - but are there any small towns nearby? Maybe those would offer cheaper rent and you'd still be close for when you wish to visit.... whatever the case, please keep us updated

@teamfreak16 My son and his wife have just moved too. They had two cats, seven goats and a sheep. They were very lucky to be able to find a place to 'accommodate' them all but they're paying plenty. Are you allowed a cat where you are now?

@JudyEv - No pets unless it's a companion animal. People lie about it so they can take their dogs everywhere. Once they say it's a companion dog, businesses aren't allowed to question it.

So sorry you had to move! It's hard enough relocating and finding another place, but having to lose your cats, that is awful The photo from brainy quotes probably reflects how you feel about leaving Manitou. Hoping your adjustment is not too painful and you find happiness real soon-DB Photo-pinterest

Well damn! It's like the recession all over again. I feel your pain, I had to go through the same thing 8 years ago uprooting from my hometown city which I tried so hard to stay to moving 2 hours south to a smaller town, just to afford to live. Needless to say, Utah is not much better either. But hey, I hear Texas is cheap! But, then again they are hurting as well. I agree about the van thing, though. As I sit at the local flying j to get my gas at the edge of the freeway, im seeing more and more road warriors. Hell, I may just do that after my kids are grown. Good luck, if you need anything, don't hesitate to ask.
