Rather than focusing on specific songs, or a certain band, the theme of this particular countdown is Favorite Soundtrack Albums. We are at #7: American Graffiti. Officially titled 41 Original Hits from the Soundtrack of American Graffiti, this, the soundtrack from director George Lucas' 1973 film, is the only soundtrack album in this series that isn't at least partly original material recorded specifically for the movie. But oh, what a soundtrack. All songs are the original hits, and are as integral to the film as the dialog and the acting. The triple platinum album, which reached #10 on the Billboard 200, contains popular "oldies" from legends such as The Beach Boys (two songs) and (two songs as well) Buddy Holly, to classics by the likes of Booker T. & the M.G.'s, The Platters (two songs,) The Big Bopper, Fats Domino, Del Shannon, and Bill Haley & the Comets. Interestingly, Universal originally encouraged Lucas to hire an orchestra to perform sound-alikes. Eventually, each publishing company was offered a flat, identical monetary sum for each song used ($90,000 total, which left no money for an actual score, which, in my opinion, would have lessened the impact of the songs used.) This entire thing is a classic. (By the way, the track listing follows the order that the songs appear in the movie.) If you dig oldies, you can do much, much worse than this collection. It's taking you back to the sunny days and star-filled nights of Southern California summer in the sixties!

No, not really. I love the heat. Summer was over entirely too soon.

wow I'd really have to go through my CDs to figure out what the best soundtracks were. All I know is that the Forrest Gump one was the absolute best. My hippie 70-80 year old grandmother used to sing and dance to it whenever we played it at family parties.

An album of original classics has to be great. I liked both the movie and the music.

I was pretty young when I saw that (I think I was 13 when it came out), and I was far more mesmerized with the music than the storyline. The one scene I can remember from the movie is one of the kids going to meet Wolfman Jack. But the music? I remember every note.

Yes, that was Curt (Richard Dreyfus) that met Wolfman Jack. My favorite scene is when Toad tried to score some booze.

The soundtrack is like a rock and roll history lesson. You are correct: every song a bonafide classic.

Great song pick and super soundtrack! How can you go wrong with songs from Bill Haley & The Comets, Fats Domino, The Crests, Buddy Holly, The Tempos, The Platters, The Diamonds, The Del Vikings, and the Beach Boys, can I stop now... All of my favorite Oldies performers BTW.

All classics. Can't go wrong with any of them. And all on one collection, too.
