I was discussing injuries with my 3 1/2-year-old friend this morning. I said I liked putting kisses on injuries because most injuries were "one kiss" injuries, meaning that one kiss on the owie rendered the injured person ready to go back and play.
She said, "Only family can put a kiss on my owies." I was a bit hurt, because I had put many kisses on her owies over the 1 1/2 years I'd known her. Had my kisses (I kiss my hand and place my hand firmly over the injured area) lost their curative powers for her?
At lunch, someone bumped a chair into her knee. She came over to me, on the brink of tears. "Matan bumped my knee!" I told her to say to say, "Matan, please be careful with your chair. You bonked my knee." She said, "Matan, please be careful with your chair. You bonked my knee." I blew a kiss toward her knee.
She looked at me angrily and said, "No, you didn't get it." I said, "You said only family can kiss your owies directly." She said, "It's OK. I have a pretzel in my sock." I immediately kissed my hand and placed the kiss on the spot she pointed to on her knee.
She said it was better and went back to her seat to finish lunch. Duh!

@m_audrey6788 Physiologically, affectionate touch leads to the release of oxytocin, which strengthens the immune system by reducing cortisol (stress hormone) levels.

Aw...what a shame the innocent ones have to know that...but I do understand her parents you know...I would tell my daughters that. But the trust that kissing the owie cures is amazing. lol. Hero hurt his leg the other day the center table ..he was running around it in a hurry and the toe I think hurt..I couldn't bear to see his face..I immediately went in and brought the pain relief spray...the guy yelled at me after I sprayed..its burning..lol.

@TheHorse i notice today's generation are quick to speak up, though sometimes for the littlest thing, unlike our generation who were told to avoid causing a scene and always be patient and understanding

@hereandthere Current college students can be funny. They're "offended" by this and that. I find the younguns to be pretty much the same as ever.

How long have you been a pyschologist? Do you work with kids only or adults too? Are the families thar are from Israel sad to be gone from here? I remember when I had to go back to Minneapolis and make some money I met Israelis and they wanted to return here but it it kept getting harder and harder to do it.

Thanks for clarifying. At first I thought you were talking about actually kissing scrapes and stuff. Yuck!
