I wonder what is the best age to get a dog.

I don´t know a thing about dogs. The only dog I ever had was a dog I inherited from my grandson. Misty was over 4 years old when she came to my house. I want a German Shepperd to bark when bad people come by. I want it (her) young enough so that she and I can get to be friends. My daughter says that she has to be at least 7 months old if I want protection. As I will have an alarm system, I think that I can wait some months to grow to be a guardian dog. But I don´t even know at what time should a dog be separated from its mother. Can you give me ideas about this?

We got our Rottweiler when she was a year old. She was already potty trained and everything when we got her. Puppies are supposed to stay with their mom's until 8 weeks old.

Thanks for telling me. And did you make friends with her being so old?

@marguicha I like what Jennifer said. She got her dog at 1 year of age and the dog was already potty trained. That is how I would want one. That would be best.

When first reading the headline, I thought that 18 years old is the best age for an owner to own a dog. Some dog breeds are strong and require a responsible owner to prevent them from attacking. Youtube has some videos of dogs attacking people. I think the best age for a dog to be owned by an owner is depends on the dog's and the owner. Me and my family got a dog when it was half a year old, we had a puppy when it was 4 months old, we also had a dog at the age of 1 and half years old. The last dog was the best ownership we had, he was smart, loyal, I used to take him a lot for a walk just for fun, he was my best friend. The real question is how much do the owner is ready to invest in the dog. If the dog is friendly, and it gets attached to you, the age doesn't matter.

@marguicha I also related to that question. I wrote that it depends on the dog if it is friendly, one can have him even at the age of 1 and half...If the dog is totally stranger, but, it gets attached to the new owner, then why not ? I know you are not young, we are friends for a long time in mylot. I hope you are all right and cured from that neverending chemo treatment series

@stringer321 I survived to the chemo and the lymphoma is on remission. But I don´t have the energy I used to have.

It sounds like you don't really want a dog, you want a security system. Dogs, when you have more than one, will scare off most burglars simply because they bark. I've been fortunate to always have 2 dogs in the past, now I have only one but at least she is protective. Do you live in a suburb?

That's great @marguicha perhaps you could get two smaller terriers, those make really good protectors as well as companions. German Shepherds aren't always that ferocious but those terriers can be a real pain in a potential burglars butt. The reason I say to get two is because when you go somewhere they will not be lonely. Even poodles make good watch dogs, they are much more aggressive then most people would lead you to believe and easy to handle because they are not that big unless you get a giant poodle.

any age is great .I am sure there isn't any limit on this.Age does not have anything to do with it. It is you how you feel and can you handle it.It is a lot of work there and very expensive to care. No age has nothing to do with this.It is You .

If you want a dog that is protective, you'd do best to adopt an adult with an established personality. You don't know what you are going to get with a puppy.

@marguicha If you adopt from a shelter or rescue, they will temperament-test the dog.

A year old or just about a year old is the best to get a dog, especially through adoption.

I really don't have an idea about this. We have our dog but our Father was the one making it a pet. And I am also wondering.

@marguicha Me too, if ever I will have a pet it should be kind just like what we had.

I think the best time to take the puppy away from the mother is around 6 to 8 weeks old.

6 weeks is too young. 8-10 weeks is appropriate.
