Summer vacation is over and the children are back in school. It's homework time again or not? Do you think Elementary School Students should have to do homework?
Some school districts in our state of New Jersey are eliminating homework for grades K-6. Is this a good idea? Could there be a better way to approach this issue? Has there been any talk of doing this in your state or country?

Seriously???? Don't tell me, let me guess, it's "harmful to a student's well-being" to actually have to learn something?!
I'm not a major conspiracy theorist, but I agree with people who say that public school has gone from education to social indoctrination. Math isn't taught, cursive handwriting isn't taught, obviously grammar isn't being taught, so what's next to go?

Some administrator up in his ivory tower must of thought this would be a great innovative teaching method to employ? Apparently researchers have found that assigning homework does not improve a child's performance. All I can say to that is the longer I live the less I understand what is going on in this world today?

Wow. I think it's a bad idea. Maybe cut back on the homework, covering only the most important parts, but not doing away with homework altogether.

@dgobucks226 I agree. Homework on weekends is a bit intense, but don't get rid of it alltogether.

You know, at least try no homework on weekends. But to get rid of it all-together makes no sense to me?

Homework might be the next nostalgic thing Alfredo. Yes, kids do spend a lot of time on cell phones or playing video games.

Well, I would not want to have that teacher! Kids still need to socialize and be kids?

I am in favour of home work not loads and loads but reinforcing things done in class and a question or to beyond what is taught

@responsiveme Agreed! More interaction and discussion on what is already covered before moving on to next topic.

I say some homework is good - but as a quick review - not torture. Kids are not having the time to "live" because of too much homework. I realize we are behind in education compared to many other countries, but shoving too much work at kids to make up for it is not productive at all.
I don't know how a couple of the kindergarten teachers managed to get approval for this, but last year they did eliminate traditional homework for their students. Instead, they had their students do certain chores at home for homework . . . how great is that. I don't know if they are still doing it this year or what the results were . . . but I think having them do chores and understanding responsibilities that are non-academic makes sense!

Like many things an appropriate balance is important. Kids are still developing socially, so the amount of homework assigned is an issue. The kindergarten idea is a good one if the parents cooperate with the program.

The kindergarten idea is a good one if the parents cooperate with the teachers and maybe they have a discussion about chores and responsibility. I do agree kids need their social time too.

@much2say Yes, I agree about the tablets! Kids need to play games and socialize! Not be glued to their tablets. All your comments make perfect sense

@dgobucks226 This is my opinion, it's also a way not to make kids grow up lazy. We must learn since very early age that there are chores to do in life.

You are right! It is a way to see if the child understands what is being taught in class.

I haven't heard anything about Colorado doing this. I was a good student, but was never all that wild about homework.

@dgobucks226 - I understand the reasoning behind it, but still didn't like it.

I hated homework, but wish I had applied myself more. Because I had to work really hard in college to succeed and I was a mediocre student in H.S. To answer your question about states doing this some of them are NJ, FL, CA

@teamfreak16 I'd rather be throwing a football or hitting a baseball or shooting baskets than doing homework

Homework, no. Unless kids want more practice for their work, that is fine. But if they want to have projects, yet I am all for projects, they are some of the best experiences. I always finished my homework during school so I wouldn't have homework at home and I wasn't as stressed. Kids don't need to be stressed, they need to learn and also be able to have fun as long as they can.

@dgobucks226 Kids are pressured too much on grades instead of actually learning these days. they aren't taught the things they need to learn and they don't have time to study because of homework. Other countries leave time to study.

@DesirousDreamer I like your premise, but how do teachers check to see if they are studying and learning the material if not for homework or quizzes? Where would the accountability be?

I think an equal balance should be entertained. Some teachers do pile on homework.

I would ask it depends on what kind of homework they want to give you in Elementary School.

Sad but it does not. I see alot of what they teach there are those that benefit from it and others that do not.

Yes I agree. Busy work or just memorizing facts does not prepare a student for more difficult studies later.

Homework is important, but it needs to be rethought in relation to quantity.

It is a way to prepare them for the future. School and homework is learning how to learn. I agree, the homework reinforces the learning
