Learning To Swim Can Be Embarrassing - Childhood Memories

I learnt to swim in the local swimming pool. This was the only possible way for children living hundreds of kilometres/miles away from the sea or a river which could be used for swimming lessons. (see the link below) When I got to know my husband, an Italian from the island of Sardinia in the Mediterranean Sea, I learnt about a different way. He grew up in a village in the mountains. Many people had vineyards down in the plain near the sea. These vineyards had water reservoirs for irrigation. They are usually five by five metres large and have two metre high walls around them. The boys from the village used to walk to these vineyards in summer and splashed around in the reservoirs. Not all vintners were happy about that - water is a treasure there - and so it happened one day that when the boys, all about eight to ten years old, were enjoying themselves in the water, a vintner crept up to the reservoir and took their clothes away. They noticed this only when they got out and wanted to dress. What could they do? They were naked! They waited until it grew dark, covered their private parts with grape leaves and crept back to the village. Oh, how I would have loved to see this procession!
I learnt to swim when I was six years old. The local open-air swimming pool in our town in the former GDR (German Democratic Republic) had a special contraption...

Fig leaves can be quite hairy and rough - I think vine leaves would have done the job.

As long as it's not poison oak...or stinging nettles.

Oh, bless them. Poor boys! Did they learn their lesson or did they continue going there?!

I wondered that too. Perhaps they kept their undies on after that.

Those poor boys. I have always lived in apartments back in NYC. So my parents taught me swimming basics in a man-made lake in the Catskill Mountains during the summertime. To this day I can swim but not too well. So if there is someplace to swim I just sort of splash around.

You learnt the basics and weren't afraid of water - that's the main thing.

That's hilarious! They certainly were lucky to have grape leaves handy. I learned to swim in the nearby ocean. My mother was a wonderful teacher!

@DianneN Isn't the salt water a shock for a child?

@MALUSE Not at all. It also makes learning to swim that much easier, since it buoys the body a bit more than fresh water. My boys learned to swim at the beach and in our pool. The beach was more fun, too.

@MALUSE I used to be afraid but my mom kept on telling me not to and brought us to many beaches to face my fear of the water

What is most important is that you aren't afraid of water.

That's odd. I didn't delete it. Maybe it drowned in the sea. :-)

Oh my word. That was a lesson and a half. I wonder if the person who stole their clothing also tells the story of the boys with the grape leaves.

I have seen boys at that age group, 8-10, walked proudly in their birthday suit.

Such a funny sight, seeing those boys covered in fig leaves only!
