Learning to Swim--Day 2

A week ago, I had my first swim lesson at the pool with my instructor Rachel. And a little over a hour ago, I returned from my lesson at my pool and feeling good and positive all over. My back did feel good as well. I believe my two practice laps I did after my water aerobics class with the front stroke helped a bit. Although it's far from perfection, I'm slowly getting there. Today we've used the aquatic barbell to help me practice breathing and by moving my arms with each stroke, when my hands held onto it. The further I had gotten with Rachel's instruction and with Rachel by my side, I've made it halfway without stopping. I also practiced it by the wall by dipping my head into the water and raising my arms above my head and to the pool. I even did it without the barbell and got a bit closer to getting the hang of it. I think I'm going to practice it some more after my water aerobics class on Friday and Monday with a lap. Then we've worked on the backstroke, when I practiced the flutter kick and floated with my stomach up and my back in the water. Rachel said it's one of my strengths so far, since I had little issues with it. I did have to stop for a few times though. Maybe all the time my mother had taught me how to do it when I was little, and how to float on my back, had paid off after all these years. That's all we had time for today. This Thursday might be another issue for my next lesson, since Rachel has to go to the local hospital for a water safety class. She wants me to try to be there a half-hour earlier. *gulp* I told her I can try, since it depends on what time I get back from my two-hour ridealong. If I get dropped off by my host Rescue Squad Member, it would be possibly doable. And if not, I might have to have lunch when I'll return from my lesson and leave right after I come home. Since she has my cell number, she'll call me tomorrow afternoon. I'll tell her I can try to be there at 12:35 PM. Maybe it would be best to resume lessons a week from today, when we'll work more on the backstroke and practice more with the front stroke to get better. I'll let you know what happens later this week.

How fun! Is your pool water warm?

The leisure pool is warm at 86 degrees. The lap pool is coolish warm at 82.

@KristenH That sounds so much nicer than what I ran into when I visited Arizona. That pool looked so inviting. And dang it was cold. I only went in once.

@sallypup It does Lenore. I prefer the leisure pool than the lap pool, since it doesn't go too deep and only 4 feet.

@peachpurple You breathe from your nose. They would teach you that in class, when you tilt your head and come up for air for each stroke.

It sounds like it is going well. It always feels good to learn a new skill. I am good at swimming but I learned when I was a child. I took a class a couple of times but I didn't like it because they wanted us to do scissor kicks and things that felt unnatural. I do my own thing.

Pretty good. I hear you. I haven't done scissor kicks yet. Maybe that's next.

I think so Arthur. Slow and steady as my late mother would always say.

@arthurchappell Maybe. I'll be happy to do a lap without stopping both ways.

I've never learnt to swim really well. I could keep myself afloat for a little while but that's about it.

@KristenH It's good that you're learning how swim now - and properly. I probably won't bother now.

The ride-along was fun for two hours. It was too cold that morning. Maybe I'll do a full day in the spring. Yep small baby steps. Hope I can get better this week.

So is this some kind of advanced swimming lessons?

No. Just beginners for me to relearn the basics. I'm not doing anything higher as advanced.

You are very brave learning to swim. I can, but hate swimming pools.
