I am back now. How is everyone? My colleague, Miss AGPR, who is now in Oman working as a classroom nursing instructor, suddenly messaged me on chat. This was when the electricity resumed at 4:45PM after we came from the cemetery. She said she misses the troop of friends, and she gets misty-eyed when we communicate with her. I tried not to talk about her family; instead, I asked her if she is already accustomed to her working conditions. She posted a laughing emoji and said that if our students here are studying in the school where she teaches, our students will all be MagnaCumLaude already. She said if our students here have a few errors in grammar and spelling, the students there are worse, and they spell with “sounds like”. She also said that there are no wrong spelling and grammar. I told her that she should be more patient because the country where she works is not an English-speaking place. Our chat ended after 30 minutes; maybe she was going to school. I was about to cook rice. Maybe later, we will continue our chat again.

Yes, she would miss her home country, but she likes her job.

Comparing people from different cultures is kind of hard. I hope she enjoys her time there.

yes. her students are Arabs and it is understood that they do not speak and spell many English words correctly. and example of English words that they spell, that sounds like is: "recive (receive), and patien (patient).

i think it's good that you make an effort to redirect her because you understand what it's like working overseas.

@ridingbet when you were overseas, how did you communicate with friends and family here?

yes, we try to divert her attention whenever she starts to talk about her family here. she says she has not yet skyped her family because the connection in their place is so poor.

They should anyway make an effort, communication is very important for nurses and doctors. You cannot risk an error because you cannot spell words correctly.

@ridingbet I fully agree, they must spell the medicine correctly, a mistake there can be very bad.

@ridingbet Better to ask for the spelling than to make a mistake.

indeed. it is imperative to spell words correctly especially regarding the medicines. that is one of my requirements if i give rotation examination at the end of the duty days: i tell them that their spelling should be correct ('wrong spelling, wrong')

@ilocosboy yes, but to the point of making bad and fake news with it.

she is in Oman. we also went to the cemetery to see if the man whom we contracted to clean our parents' tombstones are kept clean, but we were disgusted because the grass and the reeds were tall (but not tall enough to hide us from others).

we have a group chat name as "tropang prenship" but she communicated with me in my own chat account on messenger. if she chats in our group name, i expect that all friends and colleagues will contribute to the conversation, with lots of emojis and smileys.
