Buried or cremated?

Maybe this is a good topic near Halloween? I know there must be many different funeral customs for our members since we're a global community. Here in the southern US, it was pretty much expected for many years that folks would have the traditional funeral service and then be buried in the church cemetery. Over the last years, more people are choosing to be cremated instead. I have mixed feelings about it. I hate the thought of being burned. But I also believe it's a shame to pay so much for embalming, a coffin, and a vault to try to preserve a body that is going to decay eventually, no matter how well it's preserved. I know that if Jesus can raise our dead bodies at the final resurrection, He can do it whether the body was buried or burned. So, bury, cremate, or??? How do you all feel about it?

After visiting my husband's wealthy grandparents' graves in Canada, (which are now being forsaken, no one bothers to visit them after all the millions of dollars they left behind for their darling children), I have decided to have cremation for myself.

It's sad to see graves neglected.

We will be cremated. Either is very acceptable here and the decision is up to the individual.

I have already decided, I want to be cremated and I want my ashes dispersed in the nature.

@1creekgirl Over the lake of Como, that is three miles from home, or even in our garden it's fine for me.

That sounds fine. Is there a particular place you want your ashes scattered?

I like the idea of being cremated and having a tree or rosebush planted in my memory.

@1creekgirl When my mom miscarried the baby she got pregnant with after me, she planted a rosebush in its memory. I always loved that idea.

I also support cremating. The burial cemeteries in our country have become so congested that people are being buried on top of others. Graves are becoming so many that land is becoming full of graves. We need to have a solution to this and i think cremating is the only solution.

Wow, graves on top of each other! I can see why cremation could be a solution.

@nangayo We are having the same problem here. Land shortage for graveyards! With our population close to becoming the largest in the world, it is going to be a grave concern. We will soon be battling on who to give the land to the living or the deceased. It will be an uphill battle but no matter what you do, religious and social sentiments are going to be hurt.

I'll be cremated @1creekgirl . Definitely cheaper and my daughter (who lives 3 states away) can take my ashes home with her. Plus the old saying, "From dust you were created and to dust you shall return."

I have to agree with the Scriptures. It will be good for your daughter to be able to take your ashes with her.

Is cremation a common practice where you are?

Hm, it's a good question. To my mind there is just something that doesn't seem "right" about cremation. Not disrespect to those who wish to have it done. On the other hand I don't understand the need to have my body pumped full of chemicals, placed in several containers and placed underground. I mean.... not like I'm going to be enjoying how nice or not nice the casket is. I think... leave my blood in, and put me in a pine box....
