I just saw the most amazing thing!

I had to get my exam printed out for tonight's class, so I headed over to the College at about 4 PM today. As I was heading toward home, I wondered why there was a back up on Willow Pass Road, the major surface street that heads toward I-680, the main North-South Highway East of Berkeley. And then I saw him. It was a kid of about 20, riding a motorized skateboard down the right side of the road, looking at his cell phone. He was swerving slightly, and drivers didn't know whether to pass him or wait behind him. One by one, they swerved around him. I did the same. Drivers were so shocked, nobody even bothered to honk. He was an Asian kid, wearing those round glasses the Japanese bad guy Generals always wore in WWII movies. As I passed him, I tried to give him a look of incredulity, but he was so glued to his phone, he didn't notice. What's the most bizarre/clueless thing you've ever seen on the road? I hope someone phoned him in. I didn't have my cell phone with me.

Some people, huh? He's lucky he wasn't hit. The strangest thing I've seen on the road was a guy on a bicycle carrying a live chicken under his arm. This was in Hamilton, Ontario, very close to the downtown area, a few years ago.

@BarBaraPrz Did the guy and the chicken look happy together? You know that I like chickens.

What an air-head thing to do, on a major highway! If anyone hit that young man, they would have been in big trouble. One time I was heading towards town, on the main road. A bunch of kids, about six of them, were walking down that road, blocking the entire street! When I told them they needed to make room for my car to get through, they acted put out about it!

That happens here too. In some places, that can be a dangerous situation.

@kobesbuddy Cyclists sometimes do it too, but this is the first time I've seen a kid on a skateboard blocking traffic.

@TheHorse It's terrible, when a car has to come to a complete stop, while the kids cover a road, from one side to another:(

Cell phones seem to absorb their attention to the point where they are oblivious to everything around them...so dangerous,

Yeppers. A kid looking down at his cell phone literally walked right in front of my on the bike path a few months ago. He was about 18. I don't Know if he was playing Pokemon Go or texting or what. Lucky the brakes on my old Trek 820 were still working well.

I wonder if he's still alive? I doubt he will be for much longer.

He seemed like the kind of person who would cause an accident between two cars trying to avoid him, and then just keep skateboarding on.

@TheHorse Probably, but it still might be the best wake up call. My younger brother got hit by a car when he rode his bicycle through a stop sign. He was knocked out and remembered nothing. He stepped out in front of a car another time and saw the car heading for him. He wasn't knocked out and was terrified so then he learned something. Some of us require that school of hard knocks.

Young people with their phones do the most crazy things. Saturday someone entered the freeway by the wrong side... well unfortunately he caused a bad accident. His days are in danger, but also a young 32 old woman is in very bad shape.

He could fall victim to natural selection. But I worry he'll cause OTHERS to have an accident and just keep skateboarding on.

It really could. He looked so arrogant and self-satisfied--or was it just clueless. His life could change, or cease, in an instant.

Kids diving off Highway 78 bridge. This is a very narrow bridge that you pray you do not get sideswiped when two cars pass. Yes I called police.

He did not belong on the highway. I have a mobility scooter and know I cannot drive on the highway. That is really dangerous what he did. I cannot think of anything now to say what is weird that I saw on the road.

He was actually on a surface street that leads to the highway. But he was snarling traffic as they tried to get onto I-680. It was kind if surreal.

@peachpurple "Cool" I call such an act as outright foolish and ridiculous and such guys ought to be fined by the traffic police. Its better to get aside and not cause obstruction. One should not show such apathy and cause an accident prone situation.
