Re-gifting

I remember when I was about five or six. Living with my grandparents while my mom worked. For Christmas I got this huge fancy doll. I was a tomboy and my grandmother knew I would rather play outside on a broomstick that was my horse or running with the neighbor kids. She re-gifted it to someone. Probably one of the youngsters she babysat for.
Fast forward to 2017 and I wonder about the question of re-gifting. If you receive something you will never use and a friend or family member might enjoy it more than you would do you re-gift? Is it ever okay to do so? As long as the person who gave you the gift didn't find out? Or would you have to make a full disclosure?
What are your thoughts on this issue?

@celticeagle Years ago a friend gave us sugar subbed jelly. Oh gross!!! She came over sometimes, too. What to do? My kindly Mom said to just chuck some of the jelly, a little at a time, into the toilet. The gifter would not know the difference.

I did once. I got an earring daisy from a customer when I worked fast food in a mall in Illinois. I re-gifted it to my daughter because she wears pierced earrings and I don't wear any kind of earrings. She re-gifted it to someone in the family. That person re-gifted it to my sister, who re-gifted it back to me, not knowing where it originated from. It was so funny. I gave it to the thrift store so I wouldn't get it back again.

I don't see anything wrong with regifting. Why waste a perfectly good item if you know someone would enjoy it? It wouldn't be smart to let the one who gave it to you know about it because it might hurt their feelings, but otherwise, why not?

Re-gifting is fine as long as you do not make the mistake of giving the item back as a present to the one who originally gave you the gift!

I think it's fine if the product is brand new, sealed and never used!

@celticeagle If it's open, used then no way :) Unless you want to give it just because but not as a gift..

I think its okay if you do that with discretion that is if you can.
Because you might have the person who gave the gift asking after it later on say asking if the said person liked it or not.
Something like that.

@lovinangelsinstead21 ......Yes, it does. I am just wondering about the commercial ones, not special ones.

Suppose it all depends what the gift was and how much sentiment was behind it.
For me I have no problem giving something to someone else really unless say it was a gold ring or something sentimental like that.

I have never re-gifted but gave it as a white elephant gift.

@celticeagle I don't think I could ever re-gift a gift someone gave me.

I've regifted. As its better to give it use than to let it sit around or go in the trash.

since at least, someone else can be happy and put it to good use
