Bruschetta and a horse called Tiberian

Last Tuesday, we went to a Melbourne Cup luncheon in Fremantle, Western Australia. I chose Tiberian to win the Cup. Later I found out he had a very interesting history and was lucky to have been born at all. But to backtrack….. Once upon a time, in France, there was a thoroughbred called Tiberius Caesar. He was a failure as a racehorse, winning one race out of 49. Happily for him, he found a niche as a teaser and became known as ‘Caesar the Teaser’. A ‘teaser’ is a stallion used to ‘tease’ mares to see if they are ready to be mated. If a stallion approaches a mare before she is fully ready, he could easily get kicked and/or bitten by the mare so, to safeguard very expensive stallions a teaser does the initial checking to see if the mare is happy to cooperate. However the teaser never gets to actually mate with a mare. In 2011, at the end of the breeding season at Haras du Logis stud some three hours west of Paris, Caesar had been very conscientious in his profession and the staff, feeling sorry for him, allowed him to mate with a mare called Toamasina. The offspring was given the name Tiberian, the horse I chose to win the Cup. Tibernian has now won six of his 17 races. Unfortunately he didn’t manage to win the Melbourne Cup. And in another twist to the story, Caesar was the teaser for a stallion called Authorized, sire of Hartnell which ran third in the Melbourne Cup in 2016. Last Tuesday, Hartnell could only manage 20th place being well and truly beaten by Tiberian who was 7th past the post. We were at the lunch with good friends, one of whom turned 70 that day. The previous Sunday we shared in a celebration and one of the finger foods offered was the bruschetta pictured. Do you love bruschetta as much as I do?

seems cruel to the teaser to build his hopes up - he gets teased more than he teases lol

@JudyEv it would serve the handler right - can't imagine human relationships working the same way - sending a warm up act in before the partner of choice takes over - yeuch!

That's true. I wonder if he bites his handler on the way back to his stall.

I love a good bruschetta! I had no idea that "teasing" existed in the horse world - that doesn't sound too fair for the poor stallions. But I'm glad Caesar did finally get his chance .

@JudyEv I don't know the teasing things works exactly . . . . I mean what if the mare acts like she is ready when he comes around . . . do they just yank him away ?

It must be pretty frustrating for the teaser. I'm glad this one had his chance at a little romance.

@much2say Yes, that's pretty much it. Then they bring on the stallion they want her to mate with and she accepts him without any drama.

Yes, we love bruschetta this very simple Tuscan appetizer, even without tomatoes on top, only brushed with olive oil and rubbed with garlic. Interesting story of the poor Caesar.

@JudyEv Bruschetta was born well before tomatoes were imported from the America. Of course it was made without tomatoes.

I didn't know that bruschetta can be served without tomatoes. I would have thought tomatoes were an integral part of the dish.

We haven't yet done the tour of the prison. You can now be rowed in a boat under the prison.

It does indeed. Who would have thought a second-rate thoroughbred could have sired such a winner.

Some horses have some very cool names. I like the ones where both the sire and dam contribute to the name. Unfortunately I can't think of any at the moment. Maybe I'll do a post on them later.

I do like brochetta and the hubs makes it, always different when we have people over for dinner. I also love the horse races. We went to Saratoga this past fall for a big race, none of my bets worked the day of the big event, but the day before I won every horse.... $2 bets so it wasn't a lot of money.

That's interesting ... that sounds like a tough job for the teaser horse and a funny story about Tiberian. Happy birthday to your friend and bruschetta - never used to like it, though I'd be willing to give it another try
