Ooh, what a great night in Indianapolis! More about that later, but I'll resume telling you about ten songs from the world of bubblegum that I...well, don't love, but can tolerate. (Disclaimer on the disclaimer: I do love the top two songs, and there may be debate about whether they qualify as "bubblegum.") Here's today's song....another obvious selection (as pegged by @JohnRoberts in the comments of song #9).
#8: Sugar Sugar - Archies
And, like the Ohio Express, the Archies didn't really exist. They did a lot of bad things for music, though: "Sugar Sugar" was the number one song of the year 1969. Plus, with their success as a "Saturday morning cartoon" group, everybody jumped on that freaking bandwagon, and you couldn't swing one of the Groovy Goolies or Josie's Pussycats without another cartoon band on Saturday morning. Even Fred Flintstone got in on the act. Oy.
But this song isn't all that bad. Written by Andy Kim (who later had the hit with "Rock Me Gently'), who performed backup vocals on the song behind Ron Dante, "Sugar Sugar" was, is, and ever shall be the epitome of bubblegum music.
And if you just can't handle the saccharine overdose, listen to Bob Marley's cover.
Sugar Sugar
Written by Andy Kim and Jeff Barry
Recorded by the Archies
From Everything's Archie, 1969
Pour a little sugar on me (the line that supposedly inspired "Pour Some Sugar on Me" by Def Leppard):
A song written for the cartoon strip "The Archies" The same year it was written for the show it became a number 1 hit.

I liked this song. Had the 45. Nothing wrong with singing cartoon figures. Who doesn't like Alice Cooper or KISS?

Point well taken. And, speaking of Alice, he's today's counterbalance.2 people like this

Yeah, like mildew.
But it is very catchy, and that's why it was such a big hit.

@dgobucks226 — I mentioned the punk band the Qu***s covered “Chewy Chewy” and made it their own. You can also hear Marley doing that. I would kinda like to hear a thrash metal version of this.

@FourWalls This band I see during the summer plays it every time. We've talked with some of the band members and they hate playing that bubble gum song. But it is a crowd favorite, but totally different from most of what they play.

How I love this song. No matter bubblegum or not I always loved to bop to this one and it still makes me happy whenever I hear it. Have you heard this version. I rather like it too.

It’s amazing all of the terrific takes on a very saccharine song. Pickett’s is great, and I previously linked Marley’s rendition.

@FourWalls I must say both Pickett and Marley make this song a pleasure to really listen to.
