Short story: When is sadness really sadness?

Somebody wise can often turn our lives around with just a raised eyebrow

Towards the end of his long life, John was overcome with a great feeling of sadness. John had been an office worker in a large communications company for all of his working life. For some reason, now since he had retired he thought to himself that he had largely just wasted his life. John felt that his life had no significance to it, no enduring value. John felt so sad that he went to see his local doctor. This wise old doctor was even older than what John was. He looked John in his eyes, and he said to John, "Where in you is this sadness, exactly" John replied, "It's deep with my heart." "Yes", answered the doctor, "that sadness is teaching you even now, how to better love." "How so?" said John. The wise old doctor simply raised his eyebrow slightly, whilst saying, "like so?; like so!".

There is always time to turn around. Even such a thought will do us good as we breathe our last. I think of a race where a last minute lunge at the tape made a loser a winner in the end! I live with no regrets as I feel I still have time to recover whatever I feel is lost, overlooked. Reverses and sadness teach us more than a life of abundance in material wealth - siva

I have a lot of hindsights in my own life. I might not label them as regrets, but with those hindsights now, I see that many of the decisions that I made could have been better. My story above shows us, that even the so-called wrong decisions and wasted potentials still work in the background extracting their love for us to learn from, when we are ready to do so. Yes, nothing is wasted, all builds us into our future self, in one way or another. We always have the opportunity to learn from something that passed us by before. Sometimes, a wink or a nudge from someone else can help bring this about for us.

@innertalks Yes Steve, we all need reassurance from time to time. When I feel life is hard at times, I look at the few who soldier on with little regrets or let-up in their efforts. It is as if god is holding their hands when all around there is darkness. There are many a bend in life but no real end. Love will never desert us even if we fail to see its abundance - siva

@Shiva49 Karma also has a way of giving us our deserts, but love's deserts for us are the most sweet....yes, love will never desert us, nor turn our lives into a desert either.

The more you analyse the purpose of life and our role in the universe , the more complicated it gets . I remember a time when some of us argued for hours together, and put forth our views about life in general Although I felt a little depressed at that time, it also made me think and respect nature even more , since it only gives.Nature has shown us the way to live a life for each other ..

@innertalks Absolutely , we need to experience all the different emotions . It is only when you experience grief you value joy and happiness !

@kiran8 The way I see it is that love is the white light, and the emotions in it can be individually experienced as different colours of its rainbow, so to speak. Love itself remains just love though, with nothing else that comes close, but which all things bring you closer too. Feeling an aspect of love helps you to understand all of love better. Our various emotions are aspects of love I think.

And since we too are a part of Nature, other humans can also help to show us this way, as in my story above. Sometimes, the simplest of answers can show us the way to go, as with John here, he could see that even in our sadness, love is still twinkling its eye at us then too.

We only have one life and besides, I am not old yet and frequently I have the feeling that I am not living my life.

Yes, I have that feeling often too. I am just not living my life. I am just marking time, and as time slips by, it hurts me more and more, that I seem to be wasting so much of it.

@nela13 I guess this is because, like me, you are never satisfied or contented with life, or how you are living it, and so then, we can never be happy in life, about anything we do, or even just attempt to do. And yet why do I also hate this prison that is life here? I feel that I would be like this even if I was happy here, because even happiness does/or could not provide me with the answers that I seek. Life is just life, but when we have certain expectations of how we want it to be for ourselves, we will often then feel like this and disappointed too, for life is just life, it will never perfectly ever go in the exact ways that we want it too. I guess this means that we should just try to do our best, and leave the rest to remain a part of life, rather than our taking on the responsibility for all of it our self. We need to just do our best and let that be the only responsibility necessary for us to fulfil.

@innertalks at the end of the week I usually think that all I did during the week was a waste of time, I didn't spend enough time with my kids, I didn't speak with my parents as much as I wish ...
