So one of my friends got a kitten. She's pretty playful and active. The other day, my friend mentioned the kitten actually tried to leap off the staircase from first story to ground level of the house. That terrified my friend. What would you suggest to do to avoid such thing from happening. Should they just seal the staircase entrance ?

Cats do the strangest things, don't they? If sealing one area off is easy for them, maybe they should try it.

I guess that's the best solution so far.

This can be dangerous for the kitten. I agree if they seal the staircase entrance.

I think the cat is trying new things.lol It is better to put the cat in a cage if not seen by the owner.

If the kitten is still young, it should be better to seal the staircase area to avoid it gets hurt.

Even though a kitten can have decent balance, they can still get hurt @holdoors . Definitely close off the staircase and you may want to have him/her Catify the space. Meaning, a Multi-level Cat Climber. It can be bought on line from Amazon for about $60.

Try and keep the kitten inside till the find a solution. Cat and I believe kittens are very agile. My cat is 3 and she can jump up on things in our home but outside she can only jump down and not up. I have to keep her in till I find a solution. It is winter here in Jerusalem so I prefer that she goes out when I do on the porch and not by herself.

That's quite the kitten. Maybe for safety's sake they better try to keep that little dare devil in- like you said, seal off the entrance.

Seal off the staircase entrance. The kitten is still too young to make those kind of leaps and land safely without injuring itself. Her bones haven't fully developed and it would be very easy for her to break one if she landed wrong. It wouldn't be so bad if there was something soft for her to land on about half way down the staircase, but even the jolt of landing on something soft at the base of the staircase would cause a serious injury. We have always made sure that our kittens were ground bound until they were much older. It is too easy for them to injure themselves from falling or jumping from too high a location. Your friend might want to set up a few boxes or crates where the kitten can climb on them and jump off on to the ground. They may want to set it up so that the kitten can climb up onto the crate or box and have one box set a couple of feet away so the kitten can jump across to the other box. Kittens love empty boxes and if you cut a hole in one end of the box they love to crawl into the empty box and pretend to "attack" some intruder. They also love a crumpled up piece of paper to bat around with their paws. They love the little rattle it makes when they swat at it when they are playing. The best thing right now is to keep the kitten in as much as possible. It would be much safer for the little imp especially since kittens are more susceptible to various diseases and they also would be easy targets for dogs and other wild animals to attack. In America about 1/3 of the kittens left outside don't make it to adulthood because of being attacked by dogs, hit by cars, or mauled by other animals. People will get kittens and because they have claws they figure that they can fend for themselves. It's a fallacy, it takes a long time before kittens are able to fend for themselves and even when they grow up they are still open for being attacked or killed by various means. So it is much better for the little girl to be inside where it is much safer for her until she is an adult.
