What is your traditional Christmas time dessert?

Holiday or Christmastime desserts seem to vary wildly among different ethnic groups and families. My mother would just always seem to have apple pie for Christmas and several homemade squares. My aunts used to bring over their own signature squares too and so we had a lot of sweets for after the turkey. As an additional treat, my mother would also make her homemade fudge which was loved by all of us. Today- I do have apple pie but sometimes have pumpkin pie although it is traditionally for Thanksgiving. However, I love pumpkin pie so much I sometimes will make some for Christmas. This year I broke from tradition and am making brownie squares with icing and a cheesecake! This- for a change! In any country sweets are great, no matter what they are! What's your go-to Holiday dessert wherever you are?

Always have to have a pecan pie! But I am like you and I want a cheesecake, baked New York style.

We like Christmas cookies or chocolate usually. I might try making some sugared cranberries too.

My mother always had a plum pudding with a hard sauce, I still love a good Christmas pudding.

@MarymargII I buy mine and I just have to steam it which is easy and I like to make a custard with it. Oh yum!!

That sounds like my husband's favourite dessert too- I do love pudding too but don't make them- never been too adventurous when it comes to baking.

As I am Italian, the classic Panettone is never missing on the Christmas table. It is a traditional cake that I buy from a pastry store. Myself, I make a Christmas Log cake and a white chocolate mousse.

@MarymargII Never with butter, it is served after the Christmas lunch, with warm custard sauce. This is how I served it yesterday. You can have it for breakfast, as is, without anything added.

I know about the Panettone as I see it in some of our lovely Italian grocery stores here. How is it traditionally eaten? Like a fruit cake or for breakfast in the morning with butter?

Normally a no-bake pumpkin pie. However, no sweets for me until I lose the weight.

@MarymargII Yes, it is. I'm guessing I'll be able to eat some desserts by next Christmas. We'll see. By then I might not want any kind of desserts.

When I was a child we always had fruit salad and a trifle. I always like desserts.

@MarymargII We always top our trifles with custard. We went to a friend's Christmas Eve and had a lovely hot roast meal but she decided to have fruit salad rather than a Christmas pudding. But they are coming here tonight to farewell a mutual friend (couple) so we're having Christmas pudding with brandy sauce so we're looking forward to that.

Trifles are delicious- I should try to make one- I love them with custard too. My husband is from Northern Ireland and his mom used to make a delicious one- lots of sherry in it too---ha!

Back in the day when I was growing up it was always Mince Meat Pie, Pumpkin Pie, Apple Pie, Fudge and Divinity. Some yrs along with different types of cookies. My Mom was quite the baker for the holidays. Now I wonder if people even do Divinity or Mince Meat Pie anymore as I never hear of it.

Divinity could be more of an American dessert but I have heard of it. Yes, my mom usually did fudge and Apple pie and we did have Mince Meat pie when I was young too- that is an British connection. But yours certainly match mine pretty well. What is divinity exactly. I picture it almost like a white nougat chewy fudge with red and green cherries- am I right?

At this time of year, my favorite dessert is peppermint bark or chocolate bark. I just can't get enough of that wonderful stuff!

@MarymargII Same here, it's not easy to find in all the stores. I have to search around to find it, but when I do, I stock up on it!
