A New Year’s night became a murderous night and a young woman made the wrong choice. I found the story of the novel and later on the movie “Looking for Mr. Goodbar” very disturbing. This happened a long time ago but I think it is worth remembering since times have become so very dangerous these days. New Yorker Roseann Quinn who was 27, went to Tweed’s Bar on the Upper West Side in New York City. She was out for a night of fun and perhaps to meet a nice guy. It was New Year’s night when she met John Wayne Wilson, who unfortunately outwardly was a very charming man. There seemed nothing wrong with this very disturbed man, who was a homosexual but didn’t want to admit this to himself, therefore, bring out violent feelings toward women. Quinn left the bar with Wilson and went to his home. It was there that she was stabbed numerous times and sexually assaulted before she died. Before his trail, Wilson hung himself in jail in May 1973. My thoughts are that it was good that he was filled with such guilt but still if someone had noticed that he was like a power-keg about to go off then Quinn would not have lost her life. Judith Rossner wrote her best-selling novel “Looking for Mr. Goodbar” in 1975. It was the story of a similar incident and was to be taken as a warning for women not to go in for one-night stands.
