Our table with the round fruits

I am not quite sure but I don't know where did the Filipino pick the idea of placing round fruits on the table for Media Noche. My 4th brother and my sister bought round fruits after we had lunch last Sunday. Now, I am eating some of the round fruits and a few minutes ago, I peeled a piece of this clementine and ate it all whole. 12 fruits is what should be on the table, for good luck and prosperity. And now that the new year celebration is done,it will be hard for us to consume these fruits before they rot. Did you have round fruits too?

@brokenbee the pineapple too. my sister sliced it and it was sooo 'naalsem' (sour). our face would twitch and squirm. the grapes were done first and now the green apple is sliced thinly and i am eating some.

So hija were you able to consume all the round fruits now? Our melon was overripe and even the other clementines got rotten as well. The grapes were immediately consumed by the 3 of us.

Oranges and bananas I leave out of the fridge but grapes go in the fridge. We eat oranges around the holidays.

Won't the grapes rot prematurely because of the thermostat of the fridge? The oranges are also nice. Sometimes I like to eat oranges with a pinch of salt.

That is true. But when there is a piece or half a piece of apple we set that aside inside the fridge because it can act as a freshener.

I came back here because of your new discussion to see why I did not realize the salt shaker is missing.

No, the salt shaker is not missing. It is actually making its presence felt by sneaking between the fruits.

The advantage of having my brother from vacation is, our fridge is filled up with things he wishes to buy, so the fridge has no space for the fruits. But the fruits are also made as fruit salad by my sister and this should be finished in 2 days.

Happy new year my friend. I guess putting round fruits on the table at midnight of December 31 is a tradition and a practice of some Filipinos here. But sweets are also preferred so the next year will be full of love, good luck and good health.

No we didn't. We just don't think that we have to. Even when I was a kid we never collected 12 round fruits on our table for NYE. We bought the usual fruits we eat. It's impossible not to find grapes, oranges, apples, and bananas in our house back then even in ordinary days

I can imagine your dining table with fruits in a fruit basket. It makes a nice centerpiece.

We had the same way of practices. All these 12 fruits by sets should be sweet.

Happy new year kabsat. Yes some of the round fruits were sweet and some are even overripe. But what happens if not all the fruits are sweet?"mapakla ang buhay ngarud?"

No, we didn't. We had last year. I don't have time to buy and I did not go to the province. Instead, I was at the hospital in Cavite. My 3 brothers went home to Pangasinan. My sister stayed in Pampanga with her family. Me and my brother with his family in Cavite.

No, I didn't have round fruits at home. We spent our new year at my niece and her hubbys house in the Netherlands. I have no idea where and when that round fruits for New Year came to action. As I can remember, my parents didn't do that in the 60's and 70's. Maybe it's following another countries tradition again.

the placing of 12 kinds of round fruits on the dining table at the stroke of midnight, the putting of coins in the window sills, scattering of coins from the door to inside the house, and opening of all windows and all doors, and i won't forget the exchange of grapes to the neighbors and hang the grapes (in a small plastic bag) at the door, are some of the traditions that started when we believed in the Chinese Feng Shui.

I do not so mich believe with the tradition of putting round fruits during the new year for prosperity, much less wearing of polka dots. Well, You could make fruit salad.
