Where Are You Going When You Die?

I've been to a lot of Funerals. Many of them were family Funerals. Two just this year that were cremation. Some funerals were friends and business partners. A long time ago I decided I don't want to be burried anywhere, my family and friends can take my ashes and put them in some of my favorite places, mountains, camp grounds, hiking trails...or their back yard garden... This morning I read in my newspaper about green burials. What a great idea. A person can now die at home, be layed out at home so friends and family can come and say good by, then covered in natural fabric and burried in one of many places. No Chemicals, no cutting one up, no cement and steal... no grave stone. The stone can now be a rock, a tree, or no indication of a grave at all. The article also said a lot of cemeteries now have what is called “Green Burials” sections of land for just Green Burials. I think its a great idea. What do you think? If the link doesn't open just google Green Burials. The photo is mine taken years ago.
Most of us would rather not think about what happens to our bodies after we die.

How bizarre to read this post. I have been looking into something like this for myself. If I can arrange something like this soon so that my family do not have to worry about things if and when it happens. I have found several options but I want a tree planted on my behalf to give back something to this wonderful world. They are known as woodland burials here using biodegradble materials so nothing is wasted.

It is so funny we give so little thought to what is certain in our life, and so much to unpredictable stuff. That said, I wish you live real long and allow me to torture you here.

I wish they were allowed here. I'll have my kids look it up for me. I'm looking at the tree one myself I will have to let my children know ASAP - not that I think I'm going anywhere but we never know don't we as we age...

I like the idea of green buriels... but also of cremation and scattering my ashes in a place I love...

We have green burials here in Europe. I also do not want to be buried, I surely want to be cremated.

I think that is what I will do, I thought about the green but to tell the truth I don't want to be under ground.

@PainsOnSlate I am sure that I do not want to be underground. I like to think at my ashes free in the nature, born free and free for the eternity.

Interesting idea. I've never heard of the s before. The only thing is that probably cities would want codes set up first to make sure it was done right especially if putting anyone in one's yard, Id think that could pose problems if the house was ever sold, Luke the knowledge of the body would need to be known in case the new owners ever did landscaping. I also think it would be hard to dig deep enough for most that if the liked this option better they would probably opt to pay for what those did in the link.

@PainsOnSlate in thinking cremation, also, although in certain areas it's not that much cheaper. I wouldn't want or expect them to be on anyone's mantle, nor spread anywhere.

There has been some interesting thoughts here about it. At first I thought that was the bee's knees, only because I grew up with hundreds of acres of land. I don't have land like that now and even thinking farther, some day that land will either be a park or hundreds of houses. My sister and my brother's family is working at giving it to the state for park land when they go... I'm back to thinking cremation is the way I will go...

It sounds like a good idea but I wonder if the soil won't be contaminated negatively. Or worst case scenario...an animal starts to dig you up

If buried deep enough the animals will not find you and according to what I read, the chemicals used in putting one into a casket and burying it causes the soil to be contaminated. I like the idea of no chemicals but I'm not a scientist so I don't really know which is better... I need to read more.

@tzwrites I can understand your thought process now, we don't have hyenas, nothing I can think that would work so hard to dig up a body.

I like this idea. Plus why spend so much money on expensive materials to hold a decaying body. At least this way it benefits the earth, just how it is supposed to.

I totally agree with you, I have walked many cemeteries and just thinking of the land wasted to old bones is sad.

Exactly, we have to trust our family to do what we asked for.

I will be buried with next to my husband in our family plot. Cremation isn't an option in our religion. I don't know about Green Burials, but want my headstone.

Its good you have a plan and a family plot. We have moved so often so have no real plans yet except I don't want to be put in the ground...

@PainsOnSlate My husband's brother didn't want to be put in the ground either. He's in a beautiful mausoleum.

Thought provoking and thi sissue comes to our mind often. As per my faith it has been cremation. Land is also not abundant in cities where people live in apartments so burial sites are not easy to get and maintain. Personally, I want to do what is right now, then the future should take care of itself. So go for green burials is the better way - siva

I will look into the "green" more but for years I have wanted cremation and it still feels like the right way to leave this earth.
