The Meridian at Ravensthorpe, Western Australia

Recently we visited the town of Ravensthorpe in the south-east of Western Australia. We lived there for a few years when we were first married. Just a few miles out of Ravensthorpe is the ‘Meridian’. The plaque on the stone monument reads: “The Meridian of 120° E longitude runs 4 kilometres west of Ravensthorpe, 33 kilometres east of Yellowdine and some 26 kilometres east of Marble Bar. It is the baseline for W.A. Standard Time. Along this line ‘local noon’ when the sun is at its highest – occurs exactly 8 hours before local noon at Greenwich, England (i.e, 0° longitude). Local noon as 120° E occurs 16.6 minutes before Local noon at Perth.” I found this very interesting. I don’t know if other points of longitude are recognised in this way but I guess they are.

that is very cool and interesting to know. I would never have thought of the longitude meridian in any country However I know that the Tropic of Capricorn runs through Southern Africa as well as Australia somewhere

I haven't seen the one in WA. It is well north of us but one day we hope to get up there. This is a great photo.

I remember to have seen a sign on the 0°. One foot more or less and it is E or W of Greenwich, but 0 is 0.

@JudyEv No, there is a sign on the road to Cognac telling something like "You are crossing the meridian of Greenwich" and a detailed explanation. We use both Greenwich Meridian and Paris Meridian in France (The Paris Meridian is used by the Lambert triangulation of our detailed maps).

It's a first for me too. Something else to slow the tourists down I guess and hopefully have them stop in the town.

That is interesting. I don't believe that I have seen a marker like that here.

Interesting monument to have. I'm wondering what our time difference is. 12 hours? It's 9:00PM here right now.

It's so hard to work out. It says your comment posted 4 hours ago which would make it 1am there at the moment and it's 3pm here. It's all too hard. Maths was never my strong point.

@JudyEv The real beauty of our home is we can feel comfortable, adapt, to live anywhere. We read about the deep freeze in North America but our friends there know who to survive and, what more, our forefathers did too with bare essentials! siva

That all sounds so complicated to me but very neat! I love visiting cool spots like this. Make me wonder if there is a geocache nearby.

@judyev Its always nice to know exactly where and when you are. As a kid I used to find it quite thrilling to stand with one foot in one country and the other in its neighbour.

A little way out of town from where I live there is a sign with something about longitude but what catches my ey is that is says that exact spot is the center of Canada.

That's pretty cool. We stood in the centre of Australia in 2016 although they were quick to point out that the 'centre' depends on the criteria you use.

They are jam trees. Just typical eucalypts really then scrub and bush behind. .
