I am probably going to be AWOL for a while

Last week was quite shocking. On Wednesday I was seeing a patient and his relatives talking about his treatment when all of a sudden I had a floater in my eye. I rubbed my eye gently to move it but when I opened my eye I could not see. I eventually finished and left work. I saw an optician who confirmed I had a detached retina. The next morning my wife and I got up at Five AM to catch the train to London to attend the Moorfields hospital as an emergency. I was triaged and saw the surgeon immediately. He told me he needed to operate. There was no time to waste. A couple of hours later I was sitting in the recovery area with a welcomed cup of coffee. I left hospital later that afternoon and came home but I have to stay in bed for five days and when I do get up have to keep my head tilted as they also pumped gas into the eye which helps with the healing process. Apparently I am not allowed to fly. I don't think there is much chance of that for the time being. I can not see too well at the moment but as soon as things settle down and I can see better I will be back. Best wishes to you all.

I have a detached. Vitreous and have to watch for certain symptoms or I could have a similar problem. So far, and it's been a few years already, it's not progressed any further. Im impressed and amazed that you could let everyone know. Here people have to keep their heads in one position. Did you speak into your device to write this, or maybe your wife helped?

@MarshaMusselman I think they were more to do with the sudden appearance rather than long standing. The body is such a magnificent wonder and so easily can go wrong as you are aware!

@garymarsh6 Good that you kept your vision. I'm hoping that I won't ever have to have any surgery of that type, but at least there is a way to keep one's vision if any similar problems do ever occur. I've had floaters since I was in my twenties. I never knew they could be a precursor to a detached vitreous and maybe other eye ailment, too.

So sorry to hear this. Things can change in an instant can't they? Going along about your daily business and whammo - hit from left field. Try to enjoy your enforced rest and see you when you get back.

Wow it all happened so fast. I am amaze at how well you are handling it. My sister-in -law had her eye operation 3 days ago, that's after waiting nearly 1 year and is healing very badly. I wish you well and speedy recovery.
