Game Night!

January 21, 2018 5:11am CST
We spent the night before Christmas in the house of my coworkers and it turned into an improptu game night. Someone brought his PS4 and the boys played NBA 2K18. We also played some table top games like Monopoly Deal, Jenga,Lot & Run and The Resistance : Avalon. A week after, we are at it again (New Year’s Eve) and added Werewolf to our list of games. Just last night, we had another session where we played Spot It and a PS4 game called Overcooked. Overcooked is extremely fun because it’s a 4-player cooperative game where the players have to work together to cook and serve in a restaurant’s kitchen. We were shouting orders and laughing specially that one time (many times, actually) when the stove caught fire. How about you folks? Do you have regular game nights with your friends? Can you give me some ideas and games that we can play? I became the de facto game master of our group and I’m always in the hunt for new fun games.

Our son is right into board games and has a number of them. When we stayed with them last year (he is in Ireland and we live in Australia), we played a new game almost every night. Some we enjoyed were Ticket to Ride, Love Letters, Carcassone, Qwirkle, Werewolf and one I think was called Castles. Upwords is another one I enjoy and is a bit easier than Scrabble.

@yokibitz I bought the basic Ticket to Ride (US map) when we left Ireland and Vince bought me the Indian and Switzerland extensions (they come in the one box) for Christmas so we now have three varying versions to play. Each one has slightly different rules so it's not like playing the same game with a different map. Each involves different strategies. I really love it.

Thanks for the info, @JudyEv! We’ve only started playing table top games recently so these titles are not familiar to us, but I will definitely spend some time choosing which one to bring up on our next game night.

If I had friends, I'd have game nights all the time! OK, I do have friends but most of them either don't like games or are already involved in other groups. I had a games night New Year's Eve. And there's someone in my area trying to set up a regular group so, hopefully, he'll be successful and it'll be a night I can do! I have a rather large collection of board games. I'll often play on a Sunday when my eldest son comes over. Today, we played Chess (Wizard Chess, in fact!) We also have various versions of Monopoly (my favourite is the new Star Wars version), a few Trivial Pursuits (original, Harry Potter, and Doctor Who), Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Settlers of Catan, Gloom, Fluxx, several quiz games, and some traditional games like Scrabble and Cluedo, and a cupboard full of others! Some are 2 player, others are best with 3 or 4, and we have a couple of games which require a minimum of 5 players - if I recall, Avalon is one such game, is it not? (a bit tricky when there's usually only 1, 2, or 3 of us playing). So yeah, I like to game :)

Wow, I found a veteran table top gamer! Thanks for responding! We are usually around 6-10 people that's why we really enjoyed Avalon. It's just so much fun (and heartbreaking) once you discover that someone that you trusted lied to you Out of the list that you gave above, which game do you recommend for 6-10 people?

@yokibitz The best for that many would be Fluxx, although Betrayal at House on the Hill is good for up to 6 players. Gloom (a card game where you make your family miserable before killing them off) is a 4 player game but can be played with 8 if you have teams. I suppose you could team up for other games. Betrayal is my son's favourite.

I have not participated in many games, although my brother plays the PS4 quite a lot! I wrote a review on a new game called heavy rain and beyond in November 2017 on ciao but that website stopped renumerating in Dec 2017. It was a distressing game and very slow!

You should try playing Overcooked with your brother. It's like Diner Dash but on the kitchen side and the players are helping each other to prepare meals.

Ah yes, I understand your situation, @Angela150. Raising kids really take up a lot of time and effort! We also have a 1year old girl and she’s just a bundle of never ending energy

I'm glad you had fun game nights. I could tell you board games, but not computer games.

@yokibitz I have Monopoly, though I haven't played it in quite a while. I don't have anyone to play it with.

What board games do you usually play, @just4him?

My son is 12 and we love playing games such as King Of Tokyo, Ascension, Star Frontiers, and Smash Up. We prefer games that have decent replayability.
