Piano-tuning day today

It’s Tuesday in Australia and we’re just starting our day. This morning Vince will be cleaning up a couple of small machines that we hope to sell on Saturday then he will be going to golf this afternoon. I need to do some shopping but first I’ll have to wash my car as it is incredibly dusty. Or I might get lazy and take the other car. I like my little Hyundai Excel and it is very easy to park. However this isn’t a problem at the supermarket as there is ample parking. This afternoon I have to be home as the piano-tuner is coming to tune our piano. The piano was manufactured in Germany in the late 1800s by Carl Ecke and brought across from South Australia by ship when my ancestors came over to the west. They also brought an orphan foal on the ship. It (the piano, not the foal) has done good service and Vince plays it pretty regularly. The red thing on the keys is the tuner's bag of tools from a previous tuning.

@judyev I’ve never understood why people wash cars - they get dirty again as soon as they’re on the road. Piano tuning’s a different matter.

@Madshadi I have some old sheets and I think I'll try to cover it up. We did have a cover over it but the cover is now ripped and has been thrown out.

To me, a car is just something that gets you from A to B - or even maybe to C, D and E! I wouldn't worry about washing it but unfortunately even I am influenced by the opinions of other people.

Wow, that's an antique - and how wonderful it can still be played! My parents still have my old piano, it's not that old - but it must've been at least 25 years since it's last been tuned!

It is best if they can be tuned regularly but if it's never played it does seem an unnecessary expense. This one still gets played pretty often.

@JudyEv We've played it every now and then . . . but it sounds fine to me . . . but we'd probably hear the difference once it's actually tuned!

@Madshadi I don't think it is worth getting it revarnished.

We used to have an antique grand upright piano. I had a double harp, it was huge and so heavy to move.

@JudyEv I love that sound also, but cannot play the harp. Within our piano instead of just having 1 set of strings or harp, ours had two sets, or a double harp. They are somewhat rare. But very big and very heavy.

@JudyEv They are very valuable. Someone got wind of the fact that we had one and offered us a very generous amount for it. After the piano was taken to the basement, the former owners changed the stairway, so that there was a turn in it. That meant that the piano would never fit back upstairs. The person that was interested in buying ours took it apart piece by piece and hauled it out of our home that way and then he reassembled it when he got it to his piano shop. The harp weighed several hundred pounds alone. I was just happy to see it gone to a good home and of course that meant that we could finally have new carpeting laid in our basement.

@Juliaacv Sorry I thought you were talking about the instrument - harp. It sounds the same as ours as the strings cross over to give extra length.

That's quite the piano. I haven't seen one like it, not that I've seen the inside of a piano, but that one is tall, and I've not seen one that tall before. My mother had one, but not as tall. I learned to play piano on it.

@JudyEv I can understand why they went out of favor. It makes sense why they were taller.

It is tall so that the strings could be longer which gave it more volume and a better tone. The strings were slanted, again so they could be longer. Such heavy tall pianos went out of favour as they took up a lot of room.

It looks like a beautiful old piano. I have a Schmoller and Mueller from about the same time frame, I think. In the late 1800s? Mine used to be a player piano, but someone took the insides for that out. It needs to be tuned, too!

Ours isn't a player but it does still have the candlebra which is pretty unusual. Most pianos I've seen only have the holes where the candle-holders used to be. We've even had to use candles once when the power went off.

@Hannihar Vince plays by ear. Although I practiced hard and passed my exams etc I don't consider myself very musical really. I really hate playing in front of people and in the end I just gave it up altogether. All Vince's family is very musical.

What a great old piano you have with history too! I am reminded of an old tune friends of mine (brothers who played and sang together) did that went "There'll be no new tunes played on that old piano, that old piano of mine, there." be no honky tonky and no razamatazz .".and more.

I have an old Kroeger upright, not a pretty thing but a great booming sound, which I like when I play Beethoven! I had it tuned several years ago and the tuner said its sound was as close as I could get to a baby grand in an upright. I was very proud!
