Crocheted Totoro for my kids

Crocheted white Totoro

I have made this little Totoro for more than a year, even perhaps before my youngest was born. I hid it somewhere, and I forgot about it. I just found it when I was decluttering the wardrobe, where I hid it. Totoro is main character in a Japanese movie, My Neighbor Totoro. Though my kids haven't watch the movie, I let them watch the music video and listen to the soundtrack, and they like it. After I made this little Totoro, I found it is not nice at all, and I wondered if my kids would like it. I planned to make another two, one in blue, and the other in grey, then only I gave all three together to them. I decided to just give this white Totoro to the kids, and they were happy to have found it. My baby was happily holding it around, and he also likes to hide it behind his neck and asks me where Totoro is. Yes, he does pronounce "Totoro", though not very accurately. Kids really like to play peek-a-boo or hide-and-seek. Do you know Totoro? Have you watched the movie?

Although I've seen a drawing that looked like this I don't know anything about Totoro.

It's a famous Japanese movie, but perhaps it's not so popular in Australia and other countries.

@JudyEv Actually I think the big grey Totoro looks more adorable, I'll see if I can get some photos to show you.

If I could do crochets like that! I'll make my own plushie out of my fave character. Nice Totoro, simple but still cute I like it.

Thanks! Yes, it's actually very simple, but I am glad my kids like it. What will you do? It really isn't too difficult to learn how to crochet, I just learned this skill recently as I wanted to make some toys for my kids.

I like Totoro too. Though I have watched a few movies by Hayao Miyazaki (the author and producer), I still always remember this Totoro. The other movies are great too. The Totoro I made is the white little Totoro, not the big grey one. I plan to make the big grey one in future, but I have other crochet projects going on now.

@shaggin Yes, I think the big gray Totoro is the most famous one. I am not sure if this small one is called Totoro too. If I am not mistaken, this white Totoro is actually the creature the little girl found out first, this white Totoro and another blue Totoro were collecting seeds when the little girl found them. Then she followed them and found the big gray Totoro.

I do not recall a small white Tortoro it's been awhile since I watched the movie last. I only remember the big gray one with a white belly.

Thanks for your compliment. Frankly speaking, I never thought I can crochet or knit, until I have my children, and I tried. So now I believe, as long as we go and learn, we can just make it.

I LOVE it! Great job on crocheting it. Yes, I love Totoro! My kids and I really enjoy all of the firms by Hayao Miyazaki that we have seen so far. This one was really good, though it made me cry the first few times I saw it. Why haven't you let them see it? just wondering if you don't mind me asking!

Thanks! I hope to complete the other two Totoro (the blue one and grey one) soon. I am glad you have watched his movies, I like his movies too, and I think they are good for kids to watch too. I wonder how many times you have watched this, since you said you cried the first few times. I haven't really allow my children to watch any movies yet, though I have already let them watch some videos in YouTube since last year. I will surely let them watch it when they grow older a bit, but for now, we try to minimize the screen time. We don't even have TV at home.

@kaka135 That is really neat to know! I probably really don't WANT to know. some of our Miyazaki disks need to be replaced since we really have used them a lot over the years. I had a big collection long before I even had kids. I limit how much my kids watch for the most part. it was always like 1 big cartoon (animation) a day once they were old enough to really sit and kinda enjoy it. Granted that limitation went out the window the last part of my last pregnancy since I was on restrictions and aside from coloring and watching tv or music together, I couldn't do anything until I had baby girl a little early. . So we watched a lot of the films and some cartoon animations like Winx Club.

Totoro seems to be more popular in Asian countries, or perhaps Japan. The actual Totoro is actually much bigger and in grey, I am not sure if you know that. This is actually one of the two small versions of Totoro in the movie.

No I don't but I am sure my son does. He loves Japanese movies and characters and he is now an animator. That is so cute.

That is great that they loved it. Are you going to make more so they do not fight over it.?
