Have you ever had a nasty food surprise?

There was a letter in today's Times on the subject of unusual doughnut fillings. The writer said that he had once had a curry doughnut in Japan - he discovered this by accident when he thought he was eating a jam doughnut! Had that been me, I think my reaction would have been noticed by anyone within a 100 metre radius! Have you eaten something and discovered - just too late - that it was not what you thought it was?

I think I could go for a curry doughnut as long as it wasn't dusted with sugar!!

And that makes me wonder about the original mistake - I have never had a jam doughnut that wasn't sugar-coated!

@indexer I suppose if one is in a foreign country, particularly somewhere as culturally different as Japan, it would be easy to think that they just don't put sugar on their doughnuts!!

@WorDazza That is entirely possible. A nation that puts curry in doughnuts is perfectly capable of not putting sugar on jam ones!

Yes, in the United States, I was at a salad buffet and I thought that those orange things were shredded carrots. Well it was cheese, dyed in orange colour.

@indexer Yes, it was a nasty surprise, I wanted to eat vegetables and not "coloured cheese".

But was that a nasty surprise as opposed to being surprisingly pleasant?

Wow, that was just a donut in disguise to something else. Never experience it yet.

Once, many years ago, I tasted some pressed ham in a can that I thought would be good, but it wasn't good at all.

@Marty1 I felt cheated since I did not realize it until I had eaten enough

Not lately but I have seen a hamburger between a sliced donut instead of a bun.
