I need to learn to write again. Even more, I need to learn to converse. I can talk. I can type. I can spew out words at breakneck pace. But conversation requires more of an investment. It takes time. A conversation is a commitment to explore the world with another person. I think I have been away from the world too long. I don't seem to know or understand it very well anymore - and it certainly doesn't understand me. I feel like I need to cram for a life exam. I need to learn the vocabulary of my subject of study. The world has a new language every generation. I could write the answers on my shirt cuffs, but nowadays, school dress is too casual for buttoned down, buttoned up, straight-laced, sober-faced fretters of details such as I have been. Or maybe, I just need more practice.

Hello! I remember you. One should always stick to one's avatar. It's remembered more easily than a username. You come over as insecure. Why's that? The posts written after your long break can't be worse than what newbies post here every day without the slightest embarrassment.

The avatars confuse me when changed too it takes me years to remember names here but not as long for avatars. My avatar has been the same since I came back and will stay the same for as long as I'm here.

It's really hard to get started again. There's a certain flow to your day that includes commenting on the Internet or doesn't. Social media can take up so much time but if you get away from it it's hard to get back into it.

So where the hell have you been that you don't have any inkling how the world works anymore?

Why, in my own little world, of course.

I am mostly just with my kids I only really talk to another adult in person once a week or so when my boyfriend comes over. I am very socially akward and get all tongue tied when out in public trying to carry on a conversation. Chatting online works better for me. Welcome back to mylot I am sure you will do fine jumping in here in conversations

Honestly, I do think that we get out of practice in social situations. And that staying home a lot, whether with kids or without, makes it harder to blend in when you get out in social situations.

I haven't seen you around in a long time! Seriously, it is all about "practice". This is one reason why I stick around here . . . I keep on writing and get practice on coming up with fast come backs - and it really does transfer to real life. In real life, I'm not a natural conversationalist, but things go a lot smoother when I'm constantly around people - I mumble less .

I definitely prefer communicating in text than in speech. But sometimes we just have to be verbal.

@Rollo1 Yep - me too. Sometimes I really don't mind if I have a sore throat or laryngitis - then I don't have to talk .

Hello Anja. I am also uncomfortable with the modern world. The young people speak a language I cannot understand. I dislike many modern thing. May be I am only aging.

I think I finally understand that getting older is actually getting wiser. Or, if it is not getting wiser, it is just being able to remember what mistakes we've made and how not to make them again.

@Rollo1 I fully agree with you, at least we remember our mistakes.

Good to see a post from you again. I'm sure you just need to practice more. Each new generation might learn a new vocabulary but the older generations still remember their own.

There are certain things, there certainties, places and people that I think will be forgotten completely in another generation.

Nice to see you again. I'll admit that I don't really socialize a lot either. I'm mostly with my husband and my kids. I will sometimes talk to other parents when I pick up my kids, but for the most part that's it. I'm not always good with socializing and conversation.
