Favorite BIG #1 HITS Through the Years: 1970 Pop

Back from a quick, fun, and most necessary trip to Nashville for a concert, and it's time to present another very well-known song as I look at #1 songs through the years. Today's selections -- both country and pop -- are, in fact, so well-known that if you say you've never heard of them you're either (a) fibbing or (b) an Amish person who is cheating by being on the internet.
Let's start with the pop classic.
1970 (Pop): Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel
Take that melody and Art Garfunkel's voice, and substitute names out of the phone book or a grocery list, and this would still be great. Add those gorgeous lyrics of Paul Simon's, and this is one of the greatest songs in the history of American pop music. Period.
There's a game I like to play every now and then: a song will come to mind, and I'll spend time on You Tube finding various recorded cover versions of the song, to see if I can find good (occasionally) and bad (frequently) versions of the song. I don't play that game with this song. This is Artie's baby to sing, then, now, and forever.

Actually, I think it makes a great instrumental. It’s when people think they’re Artie, or have Art’s voice, that causes trouble.

Their immortal classic. I read that Simon was thrilled when his idol Elvis recorded the sing and felt he could never top the King's version!

I saw your discussion about it the other day. So many love this song, and why not!
Arriving in the 1970s there was a lot of good music going on and many great artists some just starting out. That year three songs stood out. My all-time...

@FourWalls thank you. Guess what? I got to top songs of 1971 and this is mentioned again. You'll probably see my post but this time I have a different song mentioned. Let's see if you'll find it later on.

@FourWalls - Well, it's no "All About the Bass," but it's ok.

One of the most covered songs out there. Hey, this band I listen to in the summer even covers it, although as you say nobody touches Artie. I read Art thought Paul should sing this tune. After it became a smash hit Simon said he thought the same thing

I’ve heard Paul sing it. Art is the one who should have.
