In India wearing a Gold Chain by women is more or less a must as it has become a part of the tradition. A woman hailing from an ordinary financial background also wear a chain here. Since women are soft targets and the chains are good source of income for the people who are into the act of snatching the Chain Snatching has become very common in India. People are using various methods to commit this offense, like using a motor cycle after spotting a lady and driving away on it after snatching the Chain from her neck. some times poor women are pushed on the ground after snatching so that they will be in shock before raising the alarm and this gives time for the snatchers to escape! Though these people are caught in CCTVs covering many urban areas but the rate of success in nabbing the culprits is too poor. Do you have Chain Snatchers in your Area? What are the precautions people take against these people dear friend? Please Respond! Thanks!

@AKRao24 some are kids and they are not sent to prison but in a government office for children's welfare.

@AKRao24 yes also our police are weak in this they arrest them and then leave them within the day. Indian police just need money nothing else they don't think about the public. Its my personal experience

I think chain snatchers are everywhere in India. In a crowded city like Delhi they are on action with different techniques. In a crowded bus, they used the method of cutting the chain behind then the chain fall on the floor so they collect it without getting any body's attention. One of my friends was travelling in a bus and suddenly she felt her chain is slipping off and she caught the same in her arm and kept it tight without making any sign. She opened her arm only when reached a safe place after getting down from the bus. However, not all ladies can handle the situation wisely. I agree it was her luck she noticed it and understood the gravity of situation and behaved in a wise manner. In Kerala state, things are more dangerous, Keralites are more interested on wearing gold. They feel that wearing a thick golden chain is the status symbol (for both men and women). They not only used chains but other ornaments too. If a person is wearing a thick gold chain then it will lead to physical damages as well while snatching as it won’t broken easily and get injuries around neck.

Yes, you are right, every woman can't act bravely and wisely as your friend has acted in that situation dear @Sreekala...that was her luck and the bravery that could save herself and her chain. Yes in most parts of Southern India it is worn as a status symbol and women there are ending up with serious injuries while these heavy things are getting snatched! Very bad state of affairs! Despite so many cases happening everywhere on daily basis I fail to understand what the keepers of Law are doing? They are all busy in giving security to our political leaders! So bad! Thanks!

I haven't heard of it happening here although lots of women wear gold chains. I'm not sure how valuable they'd be though if you tried to sell them.

Thanks God you don't have any snatchers there! In India women wear20K to 22K gold chains which are between 10 to 15 grams minimum in their weight which fetches handsome money to the snachers dear @JudyEv!

Its sad that people do that. They need to find a job of their own. Its common to have nice things in general here, along with chains. You don't hear of people snatching other's things too often but they do rob stores.

I think in India it is easy thing to do so beacause almost every women wears a golden chain and she becomes a vulnerable prey as she hardly can think that anything like this can happen to her ! These things can happen at the places no body even can imagine like just infront of woman's house or some where near by a local shop where she regularly go for errands etc. Thanks!

Not here in Switzerland, there are in Italy, in fact women do not wear necklaces anymore when they go out grocery shopping or to work. They only wear jewels for special occasions.
