1983 – MacMillan Press As well as numerous novels, poetry collections, short story anthologies, and comics I love reference books, especially Encyclopaedias such as this extremely informative guide, history and study of London, including entries on individual districts, churches, cemeteries, statues and streets. Not only are the big tourist attractions like Buckingham Palace and the Tower Of London covered, but obscure areas like Perivale, St Botolph’s Church in Billingsgate, replacing one burnt in the Great Fire of 1666, and many famous pubs too. The book is invaluable study material if visiting Greater London (not just the one mile square central city itself). Its editors are major historian and this shines through the book’s meticulous research. Arthur Chappell

I also love reference books. This is a precious book for tourists who want to see a little more than the usual monuments and places.

@arthurchappell There are too many tourists guides that only list the usual places. I like to know more when I visit a place, also the history of places.

Now this is interesting. I have always wondered when the queen mother is made to shake hands do her hands with so many people, does she not get tired? Instead, if she were to sit in one corner and others were to walk in queue towards her as must have been the case in ancient time, it would be more appropriate.
