Diary Monday 12th March 2018
After yesterday’s film festival visit I got to be in a short film today, as the university team I volunteer with wanted a short documentary to promote their services to the social work and medical student. I was one of about five volunteers who took part, answering unscripted questions on our work on camera. It was great fun to do.
Diary Tuesday 13th March 2018
A very demanding day today, starting with a mandatory job interview with an employment agency, organized by and supervised by the welfare services.
Non-attendance or late arrival would have meant benefit sanctions. I turned up early as did the other five conscripted applicants. The interviewer arrived twenty minutes late, and got the names of the applicants not bringing their passports as proof of ID marked down by the welfare advisors (fortunately I had my papers on me, as I already know of such Gestapo tactics).
I filled in extensive forms which repeatedly asked the same questions. I asked what the warehouse we might be recruited for actually produces. The agency rep declined to tell me, saying she wasn’t sure, which I found evasive. She was wary of my high blood pressure condition, which I had to declare on the application form, so I hope this will go against my obligatory application process going further. I should know in about a week.
My later activities were much nicer fortunately. After the hour long interview / application form process I went by bus to the community centre to pick up this week’s cheap food bag, involving food close to its sell by date that supermarkets would otherwise just throw away. This week’s random bag included goat’s milk, which I love and haven’t tried in years, fiery chicken wings, tomato soup, a large bag of Muisli, and some Fajitas.
I got a lift home before heading out again to the University to a meeting on a book we are writing together to serve the needs of social work students. I have a few chapters to write up over the next month now.
After a few errands I returned home.

What happens if somebody doesn't actually own a passport, driving licence, etc?

@asfarasiknow my passport expired in 2012 and some employers say they can't use that - not buying a new one until I need to travel abroad again - most employers don't notice or care that it has expired as it is my date of birth they need to see and that doesn't change. I don't have a driving license.

@asfarasiknow exactly, but the welfare people seem to have no problem with that

@arthurchappell £80+ quid for a passport just to try and get a low-paying job would be ridiculous.

I agree on your definition of Gestapo tactics, for the few minutes late and lack of papers. It is a shame, they seem more interested in "punishing" people than helping them to find a job. Goat's milk is very good, it is my favorite and the only one that I know does not give me stomach problems.

@arthurchappell I am intolerant to cow's milk, but I have no problem with goat's and sheep's milk. I always had since I was a baby. The doctor said it's a cow's milk protein intolerance.

@JudyEv they look for excuses to withhold payments - it is a very dangerous situation dealing with them

@Kandae11 I have to declare any work I get and my welfare stop where my wages pay more than the welfare does - that actually works well if you get permanent well paid work. It is a nightmare if you get temporary work, or paid less than welfare pays and they have to pay the difference - the paperwork, and having to provide proofs of income are a nightmare

Oh the tactics of the welfare gestapo..how horrid for you.
And its okay for the interviewer to be late..despicable.
Still it is obligatory as you say.
Good you were in that film I know you like working with the students there.
And great you got some good food and goats milk..it must be nice but I have never tried it Arthur.
So glad you got a lift as well.
