When someone is always negative what do you do?

If you say "there's light at the end of the tunnel" they'd say "you can't see enough with that light." Or if you say "the patient dog eats the fattest bone" their reply would be "because the bone didn't have meat on it." It gets on my nerves really when I meet negative ones like this. What would you do with or say to someone who is always negative?

Keep away from them. Negativity is contagious.

I do not communicate with such people. I cut all the contacts with those who influence me badly

That's okay. I should seriously consider limiting my contact with him. His negativity is so infectious.

Better to cut contacts than trying to convince or influence them.

@arthurchappell Yes, most of the time. You are left looking for what to say to make the conversation flow in the right direction because you were abruptly interrupted.

That's okay. What you wanted to say was that having close contact with such a person is not good for one, right?

I call them "Debbie Downer" or "Negative Nellie". There is sometimes no talking to people like this

@mydanods Exactly, thats why I call them that, it gives them the hint that they are being negative.

That way of thinking is infectious. You could end up laughing at the way the reply was given and then start adopting it yourself. Good advice to stay clear of such people.

Im afraid to call my sister for this very reason. Nothing I can say can cheer her up or help her see things differently. I love her dearly, but her toxicity is contagious and I can't fall victim to her constant rants.

@Starmaiden That is a big challenge. Sometimes, we need to understand why people are negative not to react badly to their negative vibes.

If you can't help her, let her be. Toxicity should not get to us.

@mydanods she is going through a very difficult time right now and needs to know that people care. But she doesnt echo the love we send her. She only sees the negative. Too many things happening in her life all at once.

I just go out my way to be even more upbeat and positive! It will either eventually rub off on them or they'll avoid me....Either way is cool by me

You can't make these negative people positive how much you try to convince them. Better to avoid them. Otherwise, you will start to feel irritated.

It's best to avoid them. They love spreading their ideas because they think by being negative they are smarter than others.
