So Long, McCabe's

It is with great sadness that I must report that my girlfriend has just informed me that my third favorite Downtown Colorado Springs bar is ceasing operations at the end of this weekend. According to our local indie newspaper, the Independent, McCabe's Tavern, a locally owned, Irish-themed bar, will be closing it's doors after twelve years in business. A trendy, "Globally inspired, shared plates with vegetarian and vegan options restaurant" called Streetcar 520 will take over the location. This, after my favorite bar, Southside Johnny's, closed last year. I loved McCabe's. When I moved back to Colorado Springs, I lived in a motel until I could find an apartment. The motel is located on the next street over, and on many a hungover morning did I stumble over for beer and Scotch Eggs for breakfast. They had live music, soccer on TV, and one hell of a selection of Irish beer and whiskey. They hosted a weekly trivia contest called "Geeks who Drink," and the head coach of the local hockey team, the Colorado College Tigers, broadcast his weekly radio show from the bar. I'm going to miss it. So long, McCabe's.
At the end of service on Sunday, March 18, McCabe's Tavern will close, ending 12 years in business. Owner Ari Howard reports the restaurant will...

Oh, no, just a bar that I like. God, I can't wait until Mueller nails these guys.

Oh, wow! I hadn't even made that connection... wasn't Sessions making his decision on that today?

...and they DID fire him. I just found out.
Andrew McCabe was set to retire Sunday. On Twitter, the president hailed the move as "a great day for the hard working men and women of the FBI - A great day for Democracy."

It's always a bit sad when a favourite hang-out closes. Hope the new one will be a satisfactory replacement.

I don't know. Sounds kind of trendy. I tend to avoid those places. I prefer "real" bars.

@teamfreak16 Is there still a choice of 'real' bars?

@teamfreak16 I bet, Mcabe's are having a rough week. Trump fired the FBI director a day before he was retiring so he could not get his full pension.

It's happening a lot Downtown, where I like to hang out. All because of landlord greed.

Yes, but it seems like all the good things are coming to an end. Being replaced with trendy corporate places. Yuck.

Don’t you hate it when a great place closes? Hmm, two of your favorite places closing...must be you. Serious question here: is there any possibility that the increase in legal pot is hurting bars in Colorado? I would imagine that pot is cheaper and doesn’t give you the hangover that booze does.

@teamfreak16 — a jazz musician told me this joke: “you know the difference between a jazz musician and a rock musician? A rock musician plays four chords for 100 people; a jazz musician plays 100 chords for four people.” I think that’s why I love going to Chicago so much. I’ve seen rock, jazz, bluegrass, and country up there. In a city that size there’s something for everyone. What most people don’t seem to realize that such is the case nearly everywhere..

I don't think so. Downtown is changing, and they are bringing a lot of trendy corporate places in lately, places that can afford the rent increase that the local guys can't. As long as we are a military town, people are going to drink.

@FourWalls - Good for him! I love hearing about that. Jazz clubs seem to be suffering all over the place, too. Meanwhile, my least favorite bar, The Thirsty Parrot, remains open. A Jimmy Buffett vibe, which is great, but crappy food and poor service, and a total thug clientele, for some weird reason.

Perhaps it's the sign of the times and you have to open up your own bar. What do you think? If not, are there any favorite bars left that you can frequent?

I have no business sense. I'd run a bar into the ground very quickly. But yes, my second favorite place is still going. For now, anyway.

@spiderdust - All I can think of is that Johnny's closed because the building owner jacked up the rent, and McCabe's is in the same building.
